NEW STANTON (KDKA) ― Rep. John Murtha has represented Pennsylvania's 12th District since 1974, but a relative newcomer to the political scene is threatening to unseat him.
On Saturday, Murtha took aim at his GOP challenger at a rally, and today his opponent Bill Russell returned fire.
Surrounded by veterans and the mother of the first Navy Seal killed in Iraq, Republican Congressional candidate Bill Russell took aim at Murtha.
Russell held a rally in New Stanton this afternoon. But on the airways, Murtha launched a series of attack ads against an opponent he admitted that he did not take seriously until recently.
Murtha continued the attack over the weekend echoing at least one of political ads at a rally in Latrobe.
"Privatization of social security, my opponent wants to privatize social security. Imagine where you wanted to be if you wanted to retire," said Murtha.
"He is running scared," Russell said of his opponent today. "He's engaged in negative attacks that aren't based on principal or policy."
Addressing reporters after his rally, Russell said he's not stunned by the recent Murtha ads, but he feels the momentum is on his side. And while Murtha is not to be underestimated, Russell says neither is he.
"When I got into this race I knew it was an up hill battle, but it was a fight that had to be fought," said Russell. "It was just to important of a fight to put aside."
Russell tells KDKA that he will be going door to door on Monday in Johnstown. .
The Murtha campaign will also be in Johnstown Monday holding a rally with former President Bill Clinton as the headliner.

Great stuff. I really hope Russell and Lou Barletta win in PA. Two excellent guys.
AMEN to that.
Bump for Bill Russell
Here in my district we have a 30-year Marine, Tom Manion, running against a punk kid named Patrick Murphy. It is my opinion that Tom Manion, father of the heroic Travis Manion, has a terrific chance of winning this race.
Murphy, who won what is generally known as "the Bucks County district" by the skin of his baby teeth in 2006 over a "moderate" Republican, didn't even win Bucks County! Murphy won the seat only because of the overwhelming parasite vote he received from of a sliver of Philadephia that is gerrymandered into the district and because the Republican turnout in 2006 was depressed (as it was nationally). I expect turnout to be through the roof this year, as the horrifying prospect of a Chicago street thug becoming Commander-in-Chief has normal people around here scared to death.
A thread posted this evening of an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Murtha surprised by unhappy voters in 12th Congressional District
Contact me to be added to ping list.
Isn’t Murphy one of those poser “conservative” democrats that Rhaam Emmanuel recruited in 2006?
Murphy was a lawyer in Iraq and is allegedly the first “Iraqi war veteran” elected to Congress. Yeah, Emmanuel kicked over rocks and came up with this worm, Murphy. I think we can get rid of him on Tuesday, though.
FRegards,

I was there as well (with VFF). In fact I’m still there.
Opted not to go up on stage, got pretty warm anyway.
Left my camera in the truck so no pix, Did get to chat with Melanie Morgan and Ms. Irey. I’d been up here in ‘06 with Boot Murtha, never got to meet her.
I was there too. Great event.
Murphy did not sign the Congressional pro-Heller brief. Nor did Sestak who took Weldon’s district. That Craig Williams/Sestak is a strange one. The Philly Inquirer endorsed Rep. Williams and if the RINO’s in Delaware County can get their brains and act together Williams might pull this one out.
Manion/Murphy is a dead heat.
Where do you find polls for these races?
Good to hear bump!
I was there, too! Where were you?
Thanks for posting.
Russell Rally Ping.
LOL!
