One of the undercovered stories of the election is that over sixty Catholic bishops felt compelled to speak out against Democratic politicians who claimed to be Catholic yet denied having a problem with supporting laws that allow and even fund ending the life of the unborn.
The Catholic bishops have also openly corrected and tried to stop political groups using the name "catholic" from saying that abortion is no longer an important matter in this election. One bishop, Martino of Scranton, even raided one meeting held in a Catholic parish to correct the speakers who were distorting catholic teaching. This earned him a distorted story ridiculing his actions in the Huffpost.
What? You don't know about it?
Maybe because the press either is ignoring the story or is making a "fair and balanced" story that gives most of the quotes to the dissident theologians and professors, not church teaching. Funny, I thought bishops were in charge of the Catholic church, but never mind.
What started the bishops to speak out was when both Senator Biden and Pelosi both made public statements about abortion that contradicted church teaching, leading to confusion.
But the real story is that of the Obama campaign is using their friends in the media to tell the bishops to shut up because when they speak out they are going against the first amendment. Nearly every story that discusses the Catholic vote has a dissident Catholic quote to contradict the bishops, and often quotes "experts" that condemn the bishops from going over the line by "endorsing candidates" or saying that God supports a single party.

Shut up and Preach? It looks like that is what they are doing.
Bishop: Dems risk being ‘party of death’
Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, the former archbishop of St. Louis and now the prefect of the Apostolic Signatura at the Vatican, told an Italian Catholic publication that the Democratic Party “risks transforming itself definitively into a ‘party of death’.” Burke was one of a handful of archbishops who said in 2004 that they would deny Communion to Sen. John F. Kerry because of his support for abortion rights. The Catholic News Service reports:
“Archbishop Burke was asked if he knew that the August Democratic National Convention in Denver featured a guest appearance by Sheryl Crow, a musician whose performance at a 2007 benefit for a Catholic children’s hospital the archbishop had opposed because of her support for abortion and embryonic stem-cell research. ‘That does not surprise me much,’ the archbishop said. ‘At this point the Democratic Party risks transforming itself definitely into a ‘party of death’ because of its choices on bioethical questions as Ramesh Ponnuru wrote in his book, ‘The Party of Death: The Democrats, the Media, the Courts and the Disregard for Human Life.’ Archbishop Burke said the Democratic Party once was ‘the party that helped our immigrant parents and grandparents better integrate and prosper in American society. But it is not the same anymore.’ Pro-life Democrats are ‘rare, unfortunately,’ he said.”

MSM better shutup!
Indeed OPS4. The good Archbishop has them nailed. The Catholic vote is going to McCain.
This time the bishops are ignoring the press, thankfully.
When will these dissident “Catholics” and pro-abortion Democrat politicians who are allegedly Catholic get excommunicated?
O could care less about their “First Amendment rights” being quashed, (they’re not, they’re just suffering the consequences of their speech), or the Church worried over losing their tax-exept status.
Holy Mother Church needs to forget about tax exemption and publicly endorse McCain and say voting for Obama puts your soul in grave danger.
My call is that the Catholic church has joined the PUMAs. I think they understand the “scorched earth” philosophy! Politics do make strange bedfellows.
McCain has already brought together the most divergent group of people that I have ever seen.
Fight to victory!
Under 'bamama rule it will be just "SHUT UP!"
So are a lot of the TV evangelists. I don't usually watch those infomercials, but I noticed they have been preaching at their followers to vote in keeping with God's teachings, laying guilt on those Christians who don't.
They are pretty good at preaching to their flocks and telling them who to vote for without actually endorsing anyone, which has to really irk those lefties.
It is exactly that kind of preaching that turns people off. Voting doesn't put your soul in danger, voting wrongly puts the NATION in danger. God doesn't bless a kingdom that is run in opposition to God's laws and teachings. People, by voting wrongly, remove the nation from God's umbrella of protection, returning to "Babylon", which means returning to the pagan ways of Satans corrupt world.
As the people abandon that protection, they tear down the barrier that blocks the wrath. "The gates of your country stand wide open to the foe." (Nahum 3:13).
""There is a way that some think right, but it leads in the end to death." (Prov.16:25).
The bible is full of warnings, that the wrath, the end, Armageddon, is held back only by faith, living in accordance to God's rules. Voting wrongly only aids in ushering in the end times, which we can see happening all around us. The USA, such as it is, is the most Christian place on the planet,(except for the Vatican) but that is decaying rapidly.
I am so proud that my Church has been so vocal about the right to life and Catholic teaching this election cycle. They even passed out booklets after Mass about how a Catholic should select a candidate!
Today at Mass, during the petitions, there was one about asking God to help citizens discern the faithful way to vote. The “Lord, hear our prayer!” was noticeably louder on that one!
Stand up and fight, everyone!
Over 100 Bishops Have Spoken Out on Priority of Life Issues Posted on October 28, 2008, 11:59 AM | Deal W. Hudson |
I have been very grateful as churches of all faiths have pulled together, especially here in California. It is Gods hand at work.
However, the Catholic church has really been in the forefront, and I greatly admire them for it.
Good going Catholics!
