NY Times: McCain Camp Finds Some Hope in Philadelphia
New York Times ^ | November 2, 2008 | Katharine Q. Seelye

PHILADELPHIA — If Senator John McCain defies the polls and wins Pennsylvania, it will be in part because of voters like Harry Klemash, 67, a Democrat who supported Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in the primary but is still not comfortable with Senator Barack Obama.

“Obama has too many socialist policies, and he doesn’t have enough experience,” Mr. Klemash, a retired pressman, said Sunday as he walked his miniature poodle in Marconi Park in South Philadelphia, a largely white, Catholic, ethnic neighborhood.

With the presidential election a day away, the polls point to an Obama victory in Pennsylvania, with Mr. Obama holding a big lead in Philadelphia. But the polls are tightening, and Mr. McCain has shown no signs of backing off his quest to win the state, which remains central to his hope of winning the presidency.

If Senator John McCain defies the polls and wins Pennsylvania...

I'm slack-jawed...The NYT is now admitting the possibility that McCain might actually take PA??! Seriously, something is afoot. Even the NYTs is getting it. Keep workin', keep prayin' folks. By God we're gonna win this thing!!

Here is why Obama loses:

Susan Streicher, 59, a retired secretary and registered Democrat, acknowledged that Mr. Biden’s Catholicism was appealing to her but said she preferred Mr. McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin, Mr. McCain’s running mate, because they oppose abortion rights. Her husband, John, 63, a postal worker, dismissed Mr. McCain, saying that he was a “warmonger” and that Alaska, Ms. Palin’s home state, “is all wilderness.” Both said they thought Mr. Obama would win.

Several other people interviewed who said they preferred Mr. McCain declined to give their names.

Many people do not want to be identified because of excess pressure for Obama. This has skewed polling for Obama from the get go.

At a minimum this seems to be some serious CYA for the NY Times, to cover their rears in case PA really does go for McCain/Palin. I wonder what they heard/learned or how worried they really are..... I am stunned they are running this in the last hours before election day, rather than pumping up the Obamanation. Maybe they’re just trying to puncture complacency for the Demcrats’ get-out-the-vote efforts, but still, PA IS IN PLAY.

"Several other people interviewed who said they preferred Mr. McCain declined to give their names"

This is what many of us have been talking about for a long time -- if this phenomenon also spills into poll responses, and it might well do so, then the polls are certainly slanted toward Obambi by a few points. Also, I suspect that nearly all of the "undecided" by now are really for McCain/Palin but simply don't want to say it outside of the privacy of the voting booth.

“’Obama has too many socialist policies, and he doesn’t have enough experience,” Mr. Klemash, a retired pressman, said”

This Democrat gets it. I think that part of the problem is that a lot of people that don’t pay attention to politics or aren’t familiar with cold war history don’t understand how alien Obama’s positions are to American history. Most Obama voters don’t really know what it is that they are voting for except a blind faith in “change.” Good for Mr. Klemash.

If McCain wins, the NYT needs to have a lot of chunks of COAL mailed to them for their Christmas stockings.

The shy tory effect from Britain in 1992. We can add the shy republican effect of 2008. British pollsters now account for this but US pollsters don’t. I have a feeling they will after Tuesday.

Exactly. If just 3% of good decent people who usually vote Democrat fear the Democrat brown-shirted thugs, that’s a huge 6% swing to our side. That’s less than one person on every suburban block, one driver at a stoplight backup of 33 cars or one plumber in a small business with 33 employees.
