America is a profoundly spoiled, irresponsible, self-serving nation.

The only thing profound about your statement is how stupid it is.

Many nations and civilizations have been saved by this country from extinction. Peoples have been helped in times of natural disasters, untold millions of dollars in charity has been given, etc.

Spoiled? Self-serving? Irresponsible? This nation is one of only a very small number who have responded!

A nation who will act like a child in a divorce: pitting the parents in a battle of who will pay more to buy their favor. Like that child, they have no idea where the money to pay for all the bribes comes from and do not understand it is not limitless.

I don't even know what you mean, but then, I'm obviously not as enlightened as you seem to be.

But we are no longer a conservative nation.

Priceless! In the face of emperical evidence you still contend to the contrary. Unbelievable.

Dr. Thomas Sowell wrote a best-selling book on just your type of people--The Vision of the Anointed--Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy which states basically that even with data showing New Deal and Great Society policies utterly failing they continue to push and fund them.

My statement is backed up by the exit polling. The #1 issue was the economy. The majority of these people voted for a personal and/or collective bailout.

Spoiled: "I want his money!"
Irresponsible: "Pay off my bad mortgage choice"
Self-serving: "What will you do for me?"

Any of these themes ring a bell?

I agree that we have a proud history of helping others, but in 3 weeks of economic stress, we totally forgot all other priorities and gave 100% attention to "help me!" The meltdown panic killed McCain's campaign and, again, sent America running to the entitlement dems for rescue.

Priceless! In the face of empirical evidence you still contend to the contrary.
What empirical evidence? 52% of us just voted for a socialist. He said he was, as did those campaigning for him. How does that lead you to conclude we are a conservative nation?

I don't even know what you mean, but then, I'm obviously not as enlightened as you seem to be.
You have never seen a child pit one parent against another with things like "If you get me this or let me do that, you will be my favorite"? If not, good for you. I see guilty parents buying favor with kids all the time.

Both candidates were asked in the townhalls "what are you going to do for me if I vote for you?" They were not asking about national security; they were asking about bailouts.

I bought a house in 2001. At closing, the mortgage company pressured me with "you do know you qualify for twice this price, right?" and "you really, really want this ARM and not the fixed, right?"

I had to threaten to leave and cancel the deal to shut them up. I bought the sq. ft. I needed but laid low on the trim and finish. I wanted the stability of a fixed loan in case I did not sell in 5 years (I actually want to stay until my kids are all out of school).

I made conservative choices and have reaped the reward of stable housing thru unforeseen times. I find it irresponsible to roll the dice and not expect to pay the house, as it were.

Based on the book recommendation, I think maybe you missed my point: I was lamenting our drifting from true conservatism. I bet with a conversation in a better communication method than written text, we would find we werer violently agreeing and have a good chuckle.
