I think it was Mr. Jefferson that said something like, “a country that can give you everything, can also take everything you have(that’s from memory).” It was actually Gerald Ford who said it, about 150 years after Jefferson died.

Actually, Mr. Jefferson said it or something very much like it. More than likely, Mr. Ford was quoting Jefferson. :)
