VOA ^

Much of the Arab press, as well as ordinary people in the street, are rejoicing over the election of Democrat Barak Obama as the next president of the United States. Nevertheless, as Edward Yeranian reports from Cairo, there are misgivings in certain quarters.

People on the streets here in Cairo, and across much of the Arab world, appear elated by the election of Democrat Barak Obama as the next president of the United States, despite some apprehension in the Gulf and in Lebanon.

Commentators on Al-Jazeera TV, which has consistently criticized the outgoing Bush administration for its policies towards the Arab world, appeared almost jubilant over Mr. Obama's election, with many hailing the results of the election as a "positive for the Arab world."

I’m confused. Since Obama converted from Islam to Christianity, shouldn’t that make him even worse than Bush in the eyes of the Arab world?

The cheering will stop once they learn that Rahm Emmanuel is Obama’s chief of staff.

Israel, Georgia, and Macedonia are the only countries out of the 80 polled where a majority wanted McCain to win. In the case of Isreal and Georgia, it’s funny how being in very real danger makes you think straight. Americans have forgotten 9/11 and gone back to their lives at the malls and movie theaters, and take our security (that BUSH assured for us) for granted. 52% of those who voted are about to get what they deserve.

Depends on the Moslem. Some are happy he knows something about Islam (mostly the wrong stuff though). Others think he's secretly a Moslem.

Others look at his deep tanned skin and say "He's one of us".

Most of them are too uneducated to formulate a valid opinion about him however.

Eventually someone should tell the A-rabs that "He lied" ~ maybe send Rahm Emmanuel to do that job. Bet he'd like that.

When you think about it from the perspective that we, as conservatives, are going to fight back and that means we are going to point out as many times as it takes to anyone who will listen that those are our enemies... it will not be good news for Obama. His associations can sink him yet and make the next round of congressional elections very interesting.

I don't think they believe he converted. And I'm not sure he has. He certainly hasn't been outspoken about his Christianity. He has parsed questions on who Jesus was like a Muslim would without mentioning Jesus was God or Jesus was Savior. But I did see one recount of an interview where Obama called Jesus his personal Lord and Savior, so I have some hope.

I'm not holding my breath but Obama could turn out to be their worst nightmare. A Muslim Apostate that is a role model to the Middle East and who supports Israel's right to exist. (I don't know that he does support Israel and he's made comments about giving up Jerusalem, but time will tell)

I’ve always wanted secret rooms in my house to hide my “arsenal”, my unredistributed wealth, or alternatively Jews as needed.

"But, for some Arab Gulf states, especially Saudi Arabia and those who deal really with the Bush family and with the Republicans in particular, I think it is not a good moment for them; they prefer to deal with the Republicans and not with the democrats, since the democrats emphasize democracy and human rights and those issues are not welcomed in such countries as Egypt, and Saudi Arabia," he added.

Throats you'd like to choke. Now let's see, who was it liberated Iraq? Hmm?

What's the significance?
