Democrats hold Wisconsin Senate, seize lead in Assembly

MILWAUKEE — Democrats seized control of the state Assembly and held onto the state Senate in Tuesday's elections, giving them complete control of state government for the next two years.

Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle isn't due for re-election until 2010. With Democrats in the majority in both chambers, the party will be able to dominate state politics. That might be a double-edged razor, though: Wisconsin won't have much money to do anything thanks to the nation's economic woes.

"If we as American citizens think there's a mess in Washington, we as Wisconsin citizens know we're in a worse mess in state government," said University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee political scientist Mordecai Lee. "The next budget is going to be a killer because Jim Doyle has drawn the lines so brightly that he will not support a general tax increase."

The GOP has controlled the Assembly since 1994. But a surge of anti-Republican sentiment in 2006's elections and Republican Rep. Jeff Wood's decision to leave the party and become an independent shrunk its advantage to 51-47 going into Election Day.

State budget is stated to be $4 billion in the red, taxes are going up and up, so welcome to the North Korea of the midwest. It’s Montana or Wyoming for me.

North Korea is just south of you. Where I live.

Stay away from Montana, not Republican enough, his highness almost took the state.
