The global warming nonsense from Newt was a deal breaker for me. He has some “splaining” to do.

“....Yep. This past summer, Newt was also one of those calling for the re-branding and transforming of the GOP”

I believe Newt’s point was/is the fact the Republicans walked away from the Contract with America (a contract that he championed) and created big government dependent programs like the K Street Project. Delay et. al. became junkies of Washington power and money - that take from any group for any reason.

If the country can survive the next for years (and that’s a big IF), I for one am happy as hell we got our asses kicked. We have deserved it for 8 years.

Newt will create an powerful message that connects with people, regardless of the coverage by the drive by’s. Personal responsibility, smaller yet EFFECTIVE government and safety at home and for our allies. We can’t reform the Federal government until re reform our party.

As for the Global Warming issue. I personally think scientists will find a tribe of Easter bunnies before anyone proves anthropomorphic global warming. That said, it is a raging forest fire of an issue. Sometimes, you just have to make sure the fire doesn’t get any bigger before you worry about putting in out. That’s what Gingrich was doing with Pelosi - containing the forest fire.

He’s a smart, smart man who probably has learned a lot more since he left Congress. I’d say it couldn’t hurt to have someone that determined at the helm of the RNC

That’s the reality of politics. There is no one politician of any prominence that reflects all my views and I think of majority of conservatives. I disagree with Newt on it as well. As a small consolation - he offered market solutions to that crap. Anyway, his positives far outweigh negatives. He needs support and critique both. He gets both from me.

Did he actually endorse the whole idea of man made global warming or was it just something about agreeing to be environmentally responsible?

Newt did a commercial with Nancy Pelosi about the "need" to combat climate change. If he was just agreeing that we should be environmentally responsible, well heck, just about everyone agrees with that as a general proposition. The devil, as always, is in the details.

In all fairness, McCain also bought into this GW hoax and the alleged resulting need for cap and trade legislation. It was by far my biggest problem with McCain. But as awful as McCain was on this issue, Obama will be even worse.

Newt is a rare Republican who can speak in complete sentences when defending his beliefs.

Newt wants to win; sign him up and find good candidates for 2010.

He also said that ‘Reagan’ conservatism is done. So I am dubious.

I hear you, but still. The GW hoax is about massively expanding the power of the federal government over our lives and our economy, and then using that power to repeal most of the industrial revolution. This is not a minor issue. It is the perfect issue on which the GOP, and conservatives generally, should take a principled stand against such an attempted huge power grab.

Like the recent federal bailout, I need to see much more compelling and conclusive proof that a problem actually exists (and that we can actually do anything meaningful about it — a separate but important issue) before I would even begin considering giving the government vast new powers to regulate CO2 emissions. It is a political loser right now only because the GOP, from President Bush on down, has lacked the political courage to tell the real truth about the GW hoax and the people behind it who stand to make millions under the cap and trade scheme that they want to hoist on the rest of us.

Very good job nathanbedford! Thanks. I agree: its a waste not to use Newts tremendous abilities at the place where he can be most effective.

The short explanation is, Newt cozied up to the environazis and not everybody forgives him for it.

Personally, I think it was a strategic decision. If he was a MMGW true-believer, he never would have started the “Drill Here, Drill Now” campaign. So what if he sat on a park bench with Pelosi for a picture? He was able to effectively force the issue of domestic drilling as a private citizen. That he’s seen as both a concerned environmentalist and a drilling proponent works in our favor. And this is an issue we’re going to need to own in two years if we’re going to have any shot in 2010.

It’s time for Newt to bring his stuff back to the big leagues, post-haste. Before this gets out of hand and we’re a permanent underclass (which we’re pretty damn close to being already).

The way to handle it is say it is a serious issue and you’ll appoint a blue ribbon commission to make recommendations and get back to you in 2 or 3 years.
