TRAVERSE CITY, MICH. (AP) - Environmentalists say Barack Obama's election and his appointment of Rahm Emanuel as chief of staff are good signs for the effort to heal the Great Lakes.
President-elect Obama and Rep. Emanuel both are from the Lake Michigan city of Chicago. Cameron Davis, president of the Alliance for the Great Lakes, said both have worked in Congress to protect the lakes.
Mr. Davis said Rep. Emanuel is, in his words, "the godfather of Great Lakes restoration" for introducing a wide-ranging cleanup package in 2003.
During his presidential campaign, President-elect Obama pledged to spend $5 billion on a Great Lakes restoration program.
Mr. Davis said Thursday he expects President-elect Obama and Rep. Emanuel to make the lakes a priority, but acknowledged the economic slump and budget deficit will present funding challenges.
The problem with the great lakes? Obama was a big name in Chicago for years and it is Chicago that is ruining Lake Michigan.
Well that makes this Michigander nervous.
Our sweet Jenny will do for the US Economy what she's done for our Michigan Economy.
She must have political experience in coping with the economic conditions The One plans to bring to all of us.
You reminded me of the time that a bus discharged sewage into Lake Michigan:
CHICAGO (AP) A bus driver for the Dave Matthews Band pleaded guilty Wednesday to dumping 800 pounds of human waste from the vehicle's septic tank onto a sightseeing boat on the Chicago River last summer.

So once they get them cleaned up, what do you want to bet they send the water to someone who needs it more than we do?
Considering the desire to farm the southwestern desert with a longer growing season and “cheap” labor, I suspect you’re absolutely correct.
However I do think Canada will have something to say about all that.
