Stores say gun-control fears spur firearms sales

FORT WORTH — While watching Republican presidential candidate John McCain's concession speech, gun owner AJ Sullivan had a sinking feeling.

"Liberals like to ban guns. That's what it comes down to," said Sullivan, 25, a Texas Christian University student.

Sullivan was among hundreds scrambling to buy a weapon Thursday at the gun store Cheaper Than Dirt! — which sold $101,000 in merchandise the day after the election, shattering its single-day sales record, said store owner DeWayne Irwin.

Stories were similar across Texas, where residents are fiercely protective of their Second Amendment rights and now fear stricter gun-control laws under Democratic President-elect Barack Obama.

"There's a mindset here of freedom, and you've bitten off more than you can chew if you think you can come after Texans' guns," said Charlissa Stokes, co-owner of Panhandle Gunslingers, an Amarillo shooting range and gun store where sales have doubled the last few days.

At Houston's Memorial Shooting Center, gun sales are up 70 percent and "the whole wall of assault rifles is gone," said manager Richard Poulis.

Fort Worth's Cheaper Than Dirt! reported about $480,000 in sales in October 2007 but $890,000 last month, jumping to $1 million including the first four days of November, Irwin said. About half of the sales are guns, mostly assault rifles and other weapons that would be subject to the assault-weapons ban if it is reinstated, he said.

President Bush and Congress allowed it to expire in 2004, 10 years after President Clinton signed the ban into law.

I wanted to pick up some more hollow point and 00 buck, but I did not get around to it until today. I was literally shocked at how slim the pickings were. I hope they restock...

Have no fear, they will. They are first, and foremost, businesses. This is probably the best market most of them have ever seen, and they're raking in money hand over fist.

I'll bet if you asked, they'd tell you that their suppliers are backlogged with orders right now.

I am headed to the show here in Montgomery the 22-23 with the same hope.

Recently added a Keltec P380 for the wife, and a Ruger LPC for me. Nice compact hidden carry weapons.

Now time to purchase a few more rifles before January.

Get what you need NOW! There is a run on guns and ammo in this country right now.

It'll do me no good to panic about current stocks. We all need to calm down, I think. The gun stores will re-stock. It's their business, and they're making historic levels of money selling products which (for now) are perfectly legal.

They're business people. They're going to do whatever they have to, to refill those shelves as fast as they can, so they can take advantage of the paranoia sweeping the gun owning public.

You can bet that the gun and ammo makers are doubling their work shifts and hiring like mad to keep pace with the demand.

But the question is, how long will they remain perfectly legal goods? Not much past March 1st in some cases would be my bet.

I'm not saying that there's no cause for alarm. Far from it. I just know that the storm troopers won't be out next week to collect our illegal firearms.

Sure, we all need to get busy strengthening our defenses. I'm only saying that the store shelves will be re-stocked soon. That's all.

They’re pass the law and it took five years for Heller to appear before the Supreme Court.

By then we won't like the New Odor of the Court much.

Two issues would have 20,000,000 Patriots march into DC to the steps of the Capitol:

1). Any attempt to infringe on our right to KABA

They've done it before, and no 20,000 let alone 20,000,000 appeared. Although technically "ban sales" and "take away" are not the same thing, in the short run anyway.

2). Any attempt to take away our freedom of speech.

Two words: McCain-Fiengold.

I’m sure that the Minutemen of 1776 broke a few of King George’s laws.

Yes they did, but breaking laws won't, for the most part, put supplies on dealer's shelves. If a gun is banned, it won't be on the shelf. Ditto ammunitioin. It won't be coming off the production lines either, except in a few cases. (Hopefully a few hundred, a few hundred thousand in the case of ammunition, black market manufacturers)

I was thinking of getting there early Saturday. I need 9MM bullets and primers. I also need to do a complete inventory of mags, components and maybe parts kits.

Drove past a small gun shop in Burbank, CA today (Friday afternoon). Thought about going inside to check out the situation but could see thru the door that the small store was wall to wall people!

Amazing — guess I’ll go mid-week instead of on a Fri. afternoon.

Never any gun shows in NYC.

I swear, if I were to run for mayor and win, I’d see about having the SHOT Show hosted at the Jacob Javits Center.

And that’s after I would lift the burdensome restrictions for citizens, so if they make purchases they can take them home.

If only...

I'm only saying that the store shelves will be re-stocked soon.

There was already a shortage of ammunition. BATFE will cut down on imports of ammunition and guns. At least they'll drag their feet long enough for Obummer to get the necessary "sensible" controls (like No Guns for Youse) in place.

BATFE will cut down on imports of ammunition and guns.

And what do you base this certainty on?

You sound like you're fairly certain that this about to happen. I know all about Obama's anti-2A stance, but you sound like you have some inside data.

So, where are you getting the information that this scenario is imminent, or are you just projecting your paranoia onto the rest of us?
