Well, they are obviously not secret. Which raises the question, why use codenames at all, if you don't keep them secret?
Dictionary.com's definiton of renegade:

The idea behind the code names is to have an easily pronounced name that has the clear distinction of being a specific individual.
Makes for clearer and less ambiguous communication among the SS folks if they have to act hastily.
And the names can and do change over time, I understand.
They probably already have separate names or designations that are used but not published depending on the situation or occasion.
