OCALA, Fla. -- The owners of an Ocala business are accused of taking a racist swipe at president-elect Barack Obama. The NAACP of Florida calls the message on the company's marquee "horrific" and "insensitive."
Last year, the same fence company and auto shop was accused of using its sign to ridicule people with disabilities. What they've posted now, some call free speech and others call an outrage.
"That's like racist right there," one resident told Eyewitness News.
"Why do they feel like they have the right to just put it out there. There's kids that come by here. There's a high school," another person said.
(The company) eventually sent out an African American employee who said his boss is no racist. "Me being a black guy, a black guy can be president, a black guy can put a thing up on a sign, he can do whatever he wants," the man said.
The president of Florida's NAACP begs to differ, calling the statement insensitive and horrific.
The company puts a different message on its sign every week.
I was thinking bright yellow, bright red roof, bold green trim- you know, bright tropical colors AA's like to wear and paint their houses especially near the oceans.
Insensitive? On the contrary, I am very sensitive
Yes, this business has a strange idea as to what constitutes a ghetto. I wonder how they interpret a middle class background.

I was even called a racist for saying he was ‘mulatto.’
Apprently some people don’t know how to crack open a dictionary, but base their hate on feelings and assumptions.

Of course, either way; it is misleading as Obama never began his life in a 'ghetto'. . .never lived in one; and not even close by.

Obama is much to be dreaded but not because he is from any ghetto. He is not, at least not the sterotypical black ‘inner city’ ghetto. His background is much more unusual and interesting, even fascinating, than that. If he’s from any ‘ghetto’ it’s the stew of bi-racial leftist Hyde Park. (from the internet map I have seen Obama lives within 4 blocks of both Ayers-Dohrn and Farrakhan - and who knows who else). And that’s not where he grew up or came from either.
The sign just says redneck and gives Obama bashing a bad name.
How dare that racist try to destroy those innocent kids' indoctrination. Now it will take weeks of special education to get those kids thinking correctly again.

That high school is a pretty good distance away from that business and that road is one of our busiest here in Ocala. I doubt those PS kids even understood what it meant...if they even noticed it. LOL
I don’t understand why the sign says “redneck”.
It seems that any attacks coming from the right are automatically labeled rednecks or ignorant hillbillies. Conservatives should not be adding to this myth.
Although the sign is offensive to some and not politically correct they have a right to show it. If we don’t like it we don’t do business with them.
Believe me, I have seen far worse signs aimed at conservatives that makes that one look like a nursery rhyme. I never hear the words “redneck” or “hillbilly” thrown their way. They are just using their freedom of speech.
Redneck should not be a bad word but it has become one by this sort of thing!
