WSJ: Obama may retain Bush interrogation policies, Gates as SecDef

Not so Changey.

President-elect Barack Obama is unlikely to radically overhaul controversial Bush administration intelligence policies, advisers say, an approach that is almost certain to create tension within the Democratic Party…

“He’s going to take a very centrist approach to these issues,” said Roger Cressey, a former counterterrorism official in the Clinton and Bush administrations. “Whenever an administration swings too far on the spectrum left or right, we end up getting ourselves in big trouble.”…

[H]e more recently voted for a White House-backed law to expand eavesdropping powers for the National Security Agency. Mr. Obama said he opposed providing legal immunity to telecommunications companies that aided warrantless surveillance, but ultimately voted for the bill, which included an immunity provision.

The new president could take a similar approach to revising the rules for CIA interrogations, said one current government official familiar with the transition. Upon review, Mr. Obama may decide he wants to keep the road open in certain cases for the CIA to use techniques not approved by the military, but with much greater oversight…

Keeping Gates and W’s GWOT policies is the very antithesis of Hope and Change (as defined by his supporters): wait’ll they get a whiff of this. So far the DUmp hasn’t.

“Obama may be dumb, but obviously he is not stupid.”

My take on it — is that Obama is scared to death of making a mistake.

Obama will ALWAYS be a slacker. Never a leader.

“Well, I guess it depends on exactly who he is interogating. The lefties are not really against rough treatment of enemies, if they can pick out who is the enemy.”

Yup.
Maybe those patriot act critics were right - “Imagine if Hillary Clinton had those powers”... no need imagining now.

The silence from the left on it will be a clear signal that it was just a political BS act from the get-go on their part, to oppose Bush policies just because he was Bush and not because they really opposed the policies per se.

I think the community organizer who had no access or desire for information pertaining to the President’s daily activities is scared. The marxist/terrorist/special interest bubble he’s lived his entire life in has negated the need to make actual decisions. The retaining of former Bush policies and people would be his first “present” vote. I fear it wont last.

If I didn't know what I was doing, I'd be too. He's such a post turtle.

Obama’s biggest problem will be keeping Nancy Pelosi in line.

I keep hearing lines like this in the mainstream media, but I have no idea what the basis for the thinking is.

Obama's record in the Senate was second-to-absolutely-nobody in promoting the hard left agenda. Where does the idea that he will have a hard time fighting the leftist tilt in his party come from?

I'm seriously trying to figure out why anybody believes Obama will struggle towards the middle against his party's wishes.

Because the lefties policies they've been screaming about for the last 8 years make nice talking points but in reality can't work. Obama will need to realize this and try to adjust them toward the middle. His supporters and party members will resist.

In typical narcissist fashion, IMHO, Mr. Obama wanted to "play" being the President. Now that he will be the President, the game is over and it's not fun anymore, when you have to make hard, unpopular decisions and take responsibility for them. He dissed XX-President Clinton and dissed President Bush. I don't think either of those men like him and if they help him at all, it will be off a cliff.

His personality is such that even the MSM is going to get sick of him, and more so when we conservatives pull the plug on our cable/satellite service and look for our news elsewhere, when we've had enough of the fawning, excuses and butt-kissing.

The higher they go, the harder they fall. Obama the Unready is simply not qualified to be the President. Thank God, that God is still on his Throne and He always knows what He's doing.

My husband puts it this way. “She doesn’t have a leftist agenda. She has Her Agenda. She is a force from Hell unto herself.” (he really likes Nancy, can’t you tell?)

That's my concern. If he eventually gets comfortable and starts manipulating things from his ideological standpoint we are toast.

I can just imagine 4 years from now if he is defeated we will be reading how “he alienated the base.” “He did not govern as a true liberal.” How rich that would be. Heh heh.

She is a nut, but defaults towards the hard left, as that is where nuts grow.
