Holiday Sales to Fall; First Decrease in 23 Years
CNBC ^ | 11/12/2008 | CNBC

U.S. holiday retail sales will fall 1 percent this year, according to America's Research Group, marking the first time the research firm has forecast a decline in almost a quarter century of surveys.

"This year looks so bad that even normally good signs for retail sales, such as more Americans staying home this Christmas, can't save the season for retailers," said C. Britt Beemer, CEO and founder of the research group, in a news release.

Do I hear a hint of a retail bailout?

Don’t worry too much about sales. People will still need stuff and will still give stuff away for Christmas. I’m expecting to increase my Christmas seasonal giving this year. The “experts” don’t always be right.........

We are cutting back but my sister-in-law will make up for everyone as she is a compulsive shopper/buyer/spender. ;)

At my household we have already decided to cut back for Christmas. There’s a recession on, don’t you know. The media told me so.

Maybe, but they’ve been saying this for 22 years straight.

‘O’ doesn’t give Christmas or Birthday gifts to his daughters, so if the followers of ‘the One’ take head to all his words, this Christmas will be in the tank.

It’s Obama’s Fault.

Yep, that's the reason I'm closing up shop. Might as well beat the rush. /sarc

I know we are cutting back. No outside lighting. The missus is plowing through her surplus fabric materials to make everybody gifts (wall hangings, ornaments, etc.). I am getting nothing. My son will get a few things like DVDs and maybe a computer game. We’ll have an old-fashioned turkey dinner at home on Christmas day that I will cook myself (as usual). Doesn’t sound too bad.

I intend to buy only from retailers displaying Merry Christmas in their signs, logos etc.

With Americans not knowing how badly their paychecks are going to get gouged, it’s no wonder that no one is eager to spend their money.

My thought exactly. I recognize that this year is ... ah ... different. But the media has been doing doom-and-gloom Christmas shopping every year for decades. It's a lie 95% of the time. I suppose it might be true this year. All I really know for sure is that the media is puishing a leftwing agenda.

Thanks for the reminder that what you do is the barometer for us all.

For a moment there I thought I wasn't going to be spending much, if anything at all, for Christmas gifts.

I'd have to search a headline database...
But I suspect this sort of negative prediction was AWOL during
Christmas 1993-2000.
And replaced with joyous predictions of ever-increasing Christmas sales.

(Hint: Who was in the White House then?)

Same old song every year. Now we learn that this is going to be the FIRST time sales fell?

Somehow I doubt people are not going to buy gifts for their families.

There is only so much gloom and doom before people say to heck with it....I’m going to enjoy the holidays.
