Royal Navy in firefight with Somali pirates
The Times ^ | November 12, 2008 | Michael Evans, Defence Editor and Rob Crilly

Pirates caught redhanded by one of Her Majesty’s warships after trying to hijack a cargo ship off Somalia made the grave mistake of opening fire on two Royal Navy assault craft packed with commandos armed with machineguns and SA80 rifles.

In the ensuing gunfight, two Somali pirates in a Yemeni-registered fishing dhow were killed, and a third pirate, believed to be a Yemeni, suffered injuries and subsequently died. It was the first time the Royal Navy had been engaged in a fatal shoot-out on the high seas in living memory.

I don’t advocate shooting surrendering thugs...but in such a case I’d be tempted to make an exception

Unless you're looking for intelligence, I'd say just throw a five-incher in the middle of the boat and be done with it. No chance to surrender, no trial, just several pirate scum instantly wiped-out.

“Where is MadIvan when you need him?”

That’s a good question. Does he still come around here anymore? I thought his viewpoints were very worthwhile, and I always enjoyed reading his posts. I know he was sometimes offended by some of the insults to his country that showed up on FR. I hope we didn’t run him off permanently.

Thanks for the post, and you’re nearly right.

The commandos were in fact Royal Marine Commandos. Our frigates often carry a detachment of 60 or so for just this kind of action.

Near enough Special Forces though!

Obama will send his new civilian force of Obamarines to fight the pirates with aggressive community organizing, which when failed, will result in massive applications of SARIN gas, as usual in failed Utopias.

(What Failure? Community Organizing Rules!)S/

Obamagaz. The thing Utopia runs on.And you can bet it will be fatal.

For some reason, I cannot listen to that and not see in my mind’s eye a bow-on shot movie of a coal-fired Dreadnought-era battleship in heavy seas in black and white.

I don’t know why.

I appreciate your optimism, but its long since past the time we ruled the waves! Still, we do what we can, where we can.

As for a song, Rule Britannia is good, but you cant beat ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ bellowed to the rafters at the Albert Hall on the Last Night of the Proms! Stiring stuff!

Cos that was the last time we really did rule the waves! Still, we can but try to emulate our glorious past.

There was something in the English news “The Sun” where some government group was wanting the RN was to make sure they didn’t violate the pirates human rights .... so when I read the article here I put in some sarcasm about the lawyers ...

From an article posted on September 25 of this year. This is really strange!

British Foreign Office officials are understood to have advised the Royal Navy not to confront or arrest pirates in the region for fear of transgressing human rights legislation or encouraging their seeking asylum once taken to the UK.

I'm just an envious Yank! I love all the Pomp & Circumstance, and haven't been recently enough to see the encroachment of the Islamic Swine.

(And BTW, compared to our leaders now King George III looks like an absolute saint!)
