US Conference of Catholic Bishops Cuts Funding for ACORN

BALTIMORE - The US Conference of Catholic Bishops is permanently cutting off all funding for ACORN in the wake of an embezzlement scandal and allegations of voter registration fraud and political partisanship.

The national nonprofit, with more than 1,200 local affiliates, attempts to organize low-income people to advocate for improvement in their communities.

Bishop Roger P. Morin of New Orleans said yesterday that the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, an antipoverty program run by the bishops' conference, decided that it could no longer be certain of ACORN's integrity or accountability. The bishops had been giving $1.1 million a year to 41 ACORN affiliates.

"We simply had too many continuing questions and concerns about these serious matters to permit any further funding of ACORN groups," Morin said.

This is good that they cut off money to an organization that cheated and actively campaigned to to elect dems who promote abortion.

It came from one collection out of the year, and it has now ended.

Well this is a good thing. Next time pay attention to what's going on in the nation, and use better scrutiny before donating money to community group organizations, even if they do claim to be bipartisan. For a bishop, you should be ashamed for not following Gods instruction to the letter.

"Hellooooho,We gave donations to our church to elect this jerk .WOW."

That's not what was intended. The church was just too trusting that ACORN was what it said it was, and actually did good work in the community, therefore they would get good bang for the buck. Church clergy have a bit too much faith and trust that there is some integrity left in society.

Giving donations to the church is all well and good, but the donation needed most is your TIME to put those donations to good use. But, because today's Christian doesn't have time for such things, they figure just showing up for an hour one Sunday a month and giving a few bucks will get them into Gods good books and into heaven.

Sometimes churches have to rely on other community organizations to do the work for them, live organize and run soup kitchens, shelters for street bums, distribute used clothing etc. through existing community organizations that already have facilities set up.

Seems to me it already was. Had you donated even a small amount of curiosity (time) as to what the church was doing with funds donated for charity, you would have noticed long ago that the church was donating to a fraudulent community organization, and could have alerted them.

""Do not judge, and you will not be judged; because the judgements you give are the judgements you will get, and the amount you measure out is the amount you will be given." (Mt.7:1-2).

Why were they funding them in the first place?

This is the 13th. The election was on the 4th. And the Bishops think of this now? For crying out loud, what do they know now that they didn’t know prior to the election?

If groups would wise up and make their objections known, guys like Obama would actually be revealed to have solid opposition. Instead folks whisper and wait until after the election to grow a set of nads.

Just damn...

The Transparency of the utilization of Donations to the Catholic Church is very opaque and limited!

Our parish and diocese provide some very high level financial reports and Pie Charts which are very difficult if not impossible to trace the source of the funds from the actual donation of the gifts to the utilization of these monies at the grass root levels such as ACORN!

Unless someone at the receiving end of these monies identifies the source of these monies, don’t count on your bishop to help you understand what is happening.

This may not be the greatest analogy but did any bishop ever function as a whistle blower in the Priest Pedophile scandal?

Don’t count on your bishops to identify any problems like monies going to ACORN!
