You make some good points, but IMO, as a lifetime resident of NC, the main thing that killed Liddy Dole and Pat McCrory was straight party voting and a slight increase in the African American turnout and a slight decrease in the Republican turnout. Obviously, many Democrats have been splitting their tickets in years past, but not this year. Pat McCrory came very close and would have won in any other year. I think that some Democrats must’ve voted for McCrory AND Kay Hagan.
I voted for Dole and I do not care at all for Kay Hagan, but Dole did not deserve to win, not only for the reasons already mentioned, but also because of her absolutely horrible job as chair of the Republican Senatorial Committee in 2006. Had she actively recruited better candidates, perhaps we would not have lost EVERY close race that year and would not now be facing the prospect of a Democratic filibuster-proof majority in the Senate following another disastrous year.
