Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero’s high-minded post-modern rhetoric brings to mind another would-be messiah. Indeed, the big news splattered across headlines all over Spain recently has been that, with the election victory of Barack Obama, Zapatero may now finally get his long-awaited invitation to the White House.

Obama is now Zapatero’s new best friend. The two were born the same day, albeit one year apart; the two are parents of two daughters; and their favorite sport is basketball. As far as matters of state are concerned, they discussed how Spain might help solve the international financial crisis (Spain is in an economic free-fall), and ways in which the two countries can cooperate in fighting climate change (Spain is the source of the biggest increase in so-called greenhouse gas emissions in Europe since 1990). Then, before hanging up the phone, Zapatero told Obama: “Hey, just call me José Luis.”...

I love the title because it so defines the Obama and his people. Just like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and others; they always have New Best Friends and usually nothing behind that.

Spain is no longer a functioning country. It is a vassal entity under the EU. Within a decade it will revert to prior independent polities under the EU superstate.

The brain drain from Spain is going to make it the first country to collapse under the weight of the baby boomer retirement schemes in the EU.

It has such a huge overhead of vacant real estate the country will never again prosper. One village a week is abandoned in Spain due to lack of residents. Spain built more homes than France Germany and Ireland COMBINED, over the last 9 years.

It has such a low birth rate there will be no labor force in 15 years. Vast swaths of the country have rapidly increasing population median ages, the whole country is like Michigan, Upstate NY and Maine. Nice for British, Dutch, and German retirees vacation homes, and not much else going on.
