Lawsuits filed by Burke contended that Bennett should not have been eligible to run for mayor because he worked as director of operations at the Hamilton Center, a not-for-profit mental health organization that receives federal funding through its Head Start program. The Hatch Act is a federal law that limits the political activity of employees of some not-for-profits that receive federal money. That sounds ridiculous. Is there any chance it would be overturned?

“Political Activity”? Like “VOTING”? Would this keep teachers from running for school committee?

That is one of the dumbest judicial decisions of which I have ever heard. While a violation of the Hatch Act (which I’m not even sure applies to officers of private entities that receive federal funding, since they aren’t the functional equivalent of state officers whose salaries are paid by the federal government) could result in a fine or maybe prison time, it certainly would *not* result in the violator being stripped of the office to which he was duly elected. I can’t see how this travesty won’t be overturned on appeal.
