No, I got my Social Security Card several years before I got a job, I was still in high school (in the mid-60's sometime.)

It was sort of a rite of passage then, akin to getting a driver's license as soon as you were legally eligible.

Of course, this was back when "the children" were still being encouraged to move toward adulthood rather than remaining forever infantilized.
