Union Voters Overwhelmingly Want to Protect Right to Cast Vote in Private

The Coalition for a Democratic Workplace (CDW) today released a comprehensive analysis of data of union household attitudes from six statewide polls. The combined findings from the key states of Colorado, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire and New Mexico suggest that President-elect Obama and the Democrat-controlled Congress may have trouble convincing voters from union households that support for the mis-named Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) is a pro-worker position.

Notably, the surveys found widespread opposition among union household voters (69%) to the EFCA, which would replace a federally supervised secret ballot process with one that requires a majority of workers to simply sign a card to authorize a union.

There is a bill in Congress called the Employee Free Choice Act which would replace a federally supervised secret ballot election with a process that requires a majority of workers to simply sign a card to authorize organizing a union and the workers' signatures would be made public to their employer, the union organizers and their co-workers. Do you support or oppose Congress passing this legislation?

Despite opposition from their own rank and file workers, labor bosses have made support for the EFCA, or "card check" bill, a top priority this year and are pressuring Democrats to act quickly to pass it. Under the EFCA, workers would effectively lose their right to a private ballot when deciding whether to be represented by a union. The secret ballot would be replaced with a "card-check" scheme where a union is organized if a majority of workers simply sign a card; the workers' signatures are made public to their employer, the union organizers and their co-workers.

The right to free, unfettered elections is essential to liberty.

That said, if it comes to an open vote, I’ve proudly stood up and proclaimed my intense hatred of unions before, and I’ll gladly do it again.

It would seem to me that the unions would like to eliminate ALL secret ballots.

You know, there are bright spots in all this, and we don’t really have to look far.

Dems don’t give a damn about the rank and file union folks accept insofar that they can extract union dues and campaign volunteers from them. They are idiot peons to them. They care about the agenda of Andy Stern & John Sweeney, that’s it. Workers’ don’t want a union forced on them and their secret ballot removed? Who cares! They’re not as smart as Obama and don’t know what’s good for them! Liberty is old fashioned anyway.

Forty years ago construction unions were run by local thugs. When contracts were up, the plan was to go on strike for two weeks in the summer (take vacations). Then the rank and file voted to accept the new agreement and go back to work. Somehow, all at once power went to the nationals. The strikes stopped. The local thugs were kicked out. Now the nationals are moving an agenda to further control the worker. Seems like the unions and corporations have a plan.

Boil the frog slowly.
