COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil." The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed Sunday to parishioners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.

supporting [0bama] “constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil.”

I’m going to use this repeatedly. I like my current tagline too much to change it, though.

material cooperation with intrinsic evil

Is that like a sin? If so, he should just tell them they need to go to confession.

Obama supporters go to Church? Who knew.

Unfortunately for many Catholics, “Social Justice” a.k.a. Socialism overides those pesky Ten Comandments.

This is what happens when you put your faith in religion and not God.

“What say you.............freepers”

People were fooled, plain and simple. Not to mention the inherent self-centered nature of man...people are more concerned with their wallets than the sanctity of life. It’s really sad.

Witholding communion is ridiculous, IMHO. Jesus never said not to take communion based on your voting record.

I'm not a Catholic, and I generally refrain from commenting on such things, but I think you raise an interesting point. On the one hand, I think the priest is making a valid assessment about the people who voted for Obama (they are not good Christians).

But how do these sinners "get better"? Are they lost for the next 4 years? Can they only redeem themselves by voting against Obama in 2012? Or will going to confession making everything all right again? If so, then the whole thrust of this article is a red herring. The priest is basically saying "Go to confession before receiving the eucharist." And that's kind of like a "dog bites man" story.

For practicing Catholics their faith and God go hand in hand.

Hard to make an argument for abortion. What happens in an abortion; a life, created by God, dies.

I think this priest is a pretty brave guy. But does he have the auhtority to do this? I guess he does.

Have a good weekend!:)

If they supported Obama then they supported his very radical views on abortion. They are not true Catholics.

The priest doesn’t refuse, the parishner should refrain.

The idea being that: it’s the parishner’s choice to bring Judgment onto him or herself.
