The Republican Governors Association announced its new leadership lineup today after their annual meeting concluded Thursday in Miami.
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford was voted RGA chairman, taking over the top job from Texas Gov. Rick Perry who will now serve as finance chairman. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour is vice-chairman, while Florida Gov. Charlie Crist will serve as chair for the annual RGA gala, and Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue will head up the recruitment effort.
.
.
.
Not on the list? Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who also attended the Miami meeting.
Some Republican governors grumbled to CNN that Palins presence at the meeting distracted from the broader display of unity they were seeking.

This man will be the next Republican president.
However, I don’t know if it will be 2012 or 2016...that’s the tough one to call.

WOO HOO !!!I hope Sanford runs for the Whitehouse in 2012. It would be nice to have an actual Conservative representing the GOP for a change.

I propose we begin a new party, the CONSERVATIVE PARTY.
To: Hoodat
I wanted Sanford to run for President this time after some of you on here recommended him. Now I am glad he didn’t because I don’t think we stood much of a chance although he would have been a better fighter.
Heading the RGA is perfect!

Superb choice. Sanford is a true conservative and has six years experience as governor. No current governor in the US is a better budget cutter than Sanford.

It’s Susan Davis who raises the point about Sarah Palin. Another trouble-making liberal feminist reporter. Sarah doesn’t need this position. She needs to govern Alaska, do a good job in the energy and fiscal areas, and prepare for 2012 if things work out that way.
To me it looks like a good choice. RINO Charlie Crist was thrown a bone, but not a big one. The others are all good choices. Notice that Bobby Jindal wasn’t chosen, either. Why should he be? He, too, is a freshman governor, who needs more seasoning first.

If she can do for national energy policy what she did in Alaska she'll be a shoe-in for President.

She seems to have gotten the same sort of reaction from entrenched interests down here in the lower 48 that has already been documented up in Alaska in her rise to the governorship there.

They are all southern and mostly conservative.
Given the monopoly in the federal government, I believe that we may be entering a new power struggle where state's are going to have to band together and refuse to enforce/accept the unconstitutional laws that will be passed this year and next.
I think that this i the only way to combat a central government gone mad, and it is the next level of checks and balances that our founder's had in mind.

good choices but started of on the wrong foot by criticizing Sarah Palin - and another unnamed source. We must get out of that mode. If you are unwilling to use your name then don't say it.
I am pleased she has no leadership role at this time. In Alaska she is too far removed from the give and take of the job.

I don’t doubt that there were complainers. Any crowd of pols is going to have a few jealous types in it. And maybe a few with a gender problem. It’s stupid, though: She is a Republican governor, no? With the highest approval rating in her home state, no? And she was just the party’s candidate for Vice President, no? Of course she should have been there, and of course she should have addressed them. They should all be grateful for the publicity.

This is a good choice. You would be hard pressed to find a more conservative governor than Mark Sanford. I love Sarah Palin, but she doesn’t need to be in this position and probably doesn’t want to be.
To: roses of sharon
At this point, they don’t bother me. Sanford only said that if conservatives don’t act, they will cede ground to “far left interest groups.” Note, he did not offer a prescription for action.

We need a candidate who isnt from the South in 2012.
Could not disagree with you more.
Geography, Demographics, "Compassionate Conservatism", "Big Tent" philosophy, and/or political gamesmanship should NOT be a factor in our selection of a viable Presidential Candidate for 2012.
We as conservatives need to agree on a candidate that acts, speaks, and lives from conservative principals and can communicate.
We need to stop immediately trying to use marketing principles as the primary driver in selecting candidates.
We have now proved conclusively that this does not work for a party whose "brand" is conservative principle.

To: WilliamReading
Hmmmm...I'd go so far as to say not from Texas EVER AGAIN. But the entire South? I don't agree. Where are your candidates going to come from then? The Northeast - no. The Upper Midwest - no. The Pacific Northwest - no. The geographical areas be slim pickings.
FWIW, I think the candidate should be either a governor or a Congressman/woman or a SOS/AG from a “red” state. Time to think outside of the box - have a “Co-presidency” -the Pres. handles the domestic side, the VP handles the international side.

You have a point there, but Crist over Pawlenty or the govs from HI or WA?
Probably the best thing Sarah can do with this crowd in the next year or two is to make strategic long-weekend fundraising trips for conservative Republican pols across the board. She could really help them—and rack up some relationships and chits along the way.

No, it’s just that all four are men from the South. I’d feel the same way if they were all from one other region too. Part of what the party needs to do is to become successful in a broader geographic region again.

Capt, remember that alot of the problems the repub party has is that alot of the decisions that are made, are made from dc/beltway people (read good old boy network). Now remember that Sarah went in and cleaned out a nest of “good ol boys” in Alaska. I'm sure that has not been forgotten by some of the good ol boys both in dc and other parts of the u.s. who tow the line for the repub leadership, She beat the old boy system in Alaska but not in the dc/beltway group. What I’m saying is she may have a target on her back from some repub party people, “hence all the backstabbing of Sarah”. you don't go into the repub party and just kick kester with out getting the ok from the top. So Sarah is fighting the, leftist/soc.dems, as well as some in the repub party and the msn clowns. God Bless Sarah's soul, she has a hard up hill battle and needs our help. Further i don't think that the leadership of the repub party really represents the Conservative veiwpoint any more, and I don't expect much help from them when it comes to electing any true conservative people that they (repub party leadership)don't feel are a part of the good ol boy system. “just thinking ya know”
