A city cop shot and killed a man in a Brooklyn church parking lot Thursday after he threatened to bash her with a folding chair.

"Drop the chair! Drop the chair!" Officer Dawn Ortiz yelled in English and then in Spanish. "Stop!"

But he wouldn't drop the chair or stop, police and witnesses said.

And when he was practically on her, the officer fired once - hitting him in the chest, said NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne.

The idea that she could have retreated a bit ...

And let the guy bash in the head of the unarmed people beside her. Yeah, she could have done that.

Physical intervention is simply not an option. Today’s cops are smart enough to know that if you restrain someone you get hurt or they get hurt and sue you. If you use your stick, you acted with malice because you have to hit him more than once to control him. If you use tazer,(an appropriate tool for this problem), you get sued because he will claim excessive force. If you shoot him well, then there is a body of law that says you are right and it is harder for his family to prove excessive force. The officer should get a bonus for good shooting.

The nearby hospital has a fulltime russian translator in its ER. I’ve been there.

"Today’s cops are smart enough....

Maybe it is cliche to actually believe that the primary mission of police is to "serve and protect". If that is secondary to the safety of the officer then they have chosen the wrong line of work.

“A city cop shot and killed a man in a Brooklyn church parking lot Thursday after he threatened to bash her with a folding chair.”

The story above said it was against the cop - nowhere did it say there were other people in the lot, just the cop alone.

The cop didn’t have a tazer? All cops carry them now ... is NYC too poor to issue them ... IOW - it was over reaction. If the guy had a knife or a real weapon, then ..... but NYC cops are notorious for killing unarmed people so I guess in this case someone armed with a dangerous chair would need killing ....

“At the risk of drawing the ire of the feminists”

Where’s the down side to that?

“this was a completely unnecessary and preventable tragedy. It is yet another human sacrifice at the altar of diversity. There was a time when cops were all WWII vets who had parachuted into France or stormed the beaches of the Pacific and could deal with a deranged individual with a chair in short fashion. Believe me there are more than enough “strapping lads” to do the job today too.”

Nor is that the only context in which women’s insistence on employment in jobs for which they are unsuited is costing lives.

i am a cop in that dept. i am 6’3”, 210 pounds. i would have shot the guy too.

I agree with you. This isn't a movie, where someone gets hit over the head with a chair and just shakes it off. A hit from a chair could break bones and potentially knock you to the ground. At that point, you've probably dropped your gun, are stunned and are looking at a potentially fatal beating.

Once this guy started closing on her, this cop quickly ran out of options.

I had a buddy that was a cop. He told my that put them through Spanish for law enforcement classes. One day they were dealing with a shooting and multiple suspects running out of a building.

He had the gun pointed at the guy and told him to raise his hands in Spanish. The guy looked at him funny but didn’t raise his hands. He told they guy raise your hand or I will shoot you in Spanish, the guy looked scared and confused but refused to raise his hands. He then realized he was yelling “Wash your hands, Wash your hands or I will shoot you” in Spanish.

Problem is that translator is not out in the streets ... the real problem as I see it is immigrants don’t want to learn English ... my great great grand parents who came from Hungary were so into being American they refused to speak anything but English (OK at home and with friends they spoke Hungarian) ... went to school in the evenings to learn and tried their whole life to get rid of any accent ....

“I’d have probably shot the guy too. Swinging a chair is going to bring a lot more momentum than a simple nightstick or ASP is going to be able to block.”

Good thing you never joined the WWE. :-)

I guess NY Cops, unlike ordinary citizens, are under no obligation to retreat.

Coney Island ... that’s a Russian area ....

No, it's not. SeaGate to the west has lots of Russians as does Brighton yo the east but Coney is decidedly not Russian territory.

The guy was breaking into cars. While I know that’s not an executable offense, the world is just a little better place today with him no longer a part of it. I know this sounds harsh but oh well...

or if this guy is another victim of the push to hire female officers?

The guy is a "victim" of his own choice to assault a police officer.

How about, is there some point where a cop can say, “F’this.” and just shoot the perp?

Attacking me or my kids with a chair would do it, and I am not a cop.
