Powder in envelope at Temple Square is nontoxic (KSL-TV in UT)

Preliminary results have come back on a suspicious white powder found at the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. FBI officials say they aren't sure exactly what it is, but they know it's not toxic.

The FBI says the substance was tested for known hazardous biological agents and toxins, and all tests were negative. Lab tests will continue to determine exactly what the substance is, and those results are expected sometime next week.

Three employees inside the temple office were decontaminated as a precaution, and a hazardous material crew cleared the office of any possible contaminants.

Meanwhile, there was a similar letter with a powder which was received at the Los Angeles LDS temple within an hour of the Salt Lake incident. That powder was also determined to be harmless.

The FBI believes the letters sent to the Salt Lake Temple and the temple in Los Angeles are related.

"Where we believe there is a connection is quite obvious. The letters are received on the same day. They are similar, are both sent to temples. So, we do think there is a connection," explained Tim Fuhrman, Salt Lake's FBI special agent in charge.

The FBI is now looking for suspects of who may have been responsible for mailing the letters. There's no information on if the letters contained a message and what that message may have been; however, we do know the letter came from out of state.

"When we get to the bottom of it, if we want to advise the public what was there, we will do that. We obviously have been very successful in doing that in previous cases. But for now, we're not going to comment whether there was a return address or a threat or anything inside," Fuhrman said.

There are stiff federal penalties for making false threats like this and the FBI along with the U.S. Postal Service is trying to trace the letters.

Local gay groups have condemned the violence and threats but in so doing, have called the frustration over Prop 8 "understandable." Not the most ringing condemnation I've ever heard but at least they're not supporting and defending it.

The Mormon Church does not practice polygamy.

Do not debate theology on the News/Activism forum. Take it to the Religion Forum.

Actually, it sounds like, “I wouldn’t do it myself but I understand why someone would.”

The Fundamentalist LDS church which adheres to the original writings of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young practices polygamy; as did the Mormon church for decades. Did the unchangeable God just “change his mind” with what he allegedly said to Smith about everything else that was downloaded to Smith concerning the foundation of the Mormon church?

It would seem, in that case, that either Smith or God is a liar.

Think I’ll stick with the latter.

So, you’re taking the side of the gays on this one? Violence against the LDS church is deserved?

Not at all. But Christians have no right to take up arms against gays, no matter how violent it gets. Yet I heard a preacher say this very thing. Making a law against homosexuality is not going to make the sin of it go away; Christians have the duty to God to preach the word to gays, not make them mortal enemies. Paul wrote that “such were some of you” about gays in the early church; we have no right to judge them, they “know not what they do” if you know what I mean. My personal concern is how do I witness to the gay people in my life with all this hatred?

If Mormons were Christians, they would offer up the way to help these rank sinners out of their sin instead of insisting that a law is the “righteous” way to deal with them... and Mormons have no right to talk, considering the lack of reverence towards Marriage that their founders preached.

That said, if gays want civil ceremonies no problem but there are tax and legal reasons for Prop 8 that I of course agree with. The ironic thing about it all is that polygamy could be made legal if Prop 8 didn’t pass!

What is so hard to believe here? We're on the same side. Be glad for it for once. Whether we disagree on other things is currently irrelevant. Religion in general is being attacked here. Gays are demanding the ability to dictate to organized religion through intimidation, threats and violence, what is and is not acceptable theology. Do you want them to have that kind of power? We want the same thing here, don't we? So let's drop the angry "they're not Christian" stuff and work together on this one, doesn't that make sense?

Don't like them taking credit for this because methinks they are using it to pave the way for Mitt 2012 with the togetherness established with evangelicals. I don't want a Mormon in high office. I don't want Jehovah's Witnesses in high office and I don't want Muslims in high office either.

For all the talk, in the secular world, the movie world and the internet about an antichrist, people are forgetting that the Bible predicts a religious tyrant over the one world theocracy of The End. Not a Political one alone. This is why I don't want people with questionable or counterfeit Christianity in high office. Imagine a Marxist Obama who convinced the whole world he was Jesus and could rule with Godlike, actually God's authority? This is why I am wary of Mormons in high office or in politics at all, because I believe in the Bible.

The Bible also says do not be “unequally yoked” with unbelievers. Mormons are not Christians by their own belief system, and consider normative Christians as unbelievers ourselves! Ask ‘em. We are the “heathen” in Mormon ideology. I guess that would make flagrant gays the “super heathen”...

The gays attacked us. There was no credit to take. They decided to focus on us. The church has consistently stated that they were one of a coalition of religions that worked to defeat Gay Marriage. We successfully defended traditional marriage together and if we want to go on protecting it, we will need to continue to work together. The opposition will not give up, you can count on that. Just because we work together on this does not imply that you agree with us. It only means we share this issue in common.

This issue is incredibly important, not just to Mormons or Catholics or Baptists or whomever, its important to civilization itself. So, I ask again, why not work together on this? We need to be allies right now, not rivals. If we don't, we may ultimately lose the war and surely that's not God's will.

You don't think that's already happened? The Nation of Islam calls him their Messiah, his voters say he "inspires" them and they are all willing to go along with whatever he wants for "the common good" and the press worships him and hangs onto his every word like he's God.

The good news is that there is a real Messiah and He is the one who IS in control. That, at least, has not changed.

I heard a frigthening word from a preacher today who looked up the “Anti Christ” as a research assignment.

Apparently, it is not singular. As in it will not be just one man.

It does lend weight to the idea that it is a spirit already in the world.

Sounds like it is a SYSTEM of many antiChrists in totalitarian rule.

All I know is the Bible says there will be a “great falling away” into Apostasy and this means the CHURCh not the world. The End Time Delusion is the AntiChrist spirit, etc.
