US President-elect Barack Obama says he will shut down the "war on terror'' internment camp at Guantanamo Bay and rebuild "America's moral stature in the world,'' in a major interview aired overnight.
"I have said repeatedly that I intend to close Guantanamo, and I will follow through on that,'' the Democrat, who takes office on January 20, told the CBS program 60 Minutes.
"I have said repeatedly that America doesn't torture. And I'm going to make sure that we don't torture. Those are part and parcel of an effort to regain America's moral stature in the world,'' Senator Obama said.
In the wide-ranging interview, Senator Obama also vowed no retreat from his campaign promise to begin pulling troops out of Iraq and switch the military focus to Afghanistan.
"As soon as I take office, I will call in the Joint Chiefs of Staff, my national security apparatus, and we will start executing a plan that draws down our troops,'' he said.

Pull out of Iraq to go to Afghanistan and suddenly they’ll notice there is nobody to fight there (since they all headed to Iraq) and so the USA will declare peace and go home. Six months later a nuke goes off somewhere in the USA.

Guess what, Obama? You can be as loving as peaceful as you like, and it ain’t gonna make Islamic terrorists, or anyone else, for that matter, love us any more.
My two daughters had already decided to reup in January next year. If they didn’t, they would be in for most of his term anyway. I have already put a reminder out there to them about only having to obey “lawful” orders. As far as I know, they swore only to support and defend the Constitution, not the President. IMO, we need patriotic service people in there who will protect and defend the people of the US ~ even from their own President if it should come to that. I hope honorable patriots don’t resign their commissions solely on account of Obama.
Ron Paul didn’t even get support from Republicans. Folks could have voted for him, if they’d thought he had the right ideas, but apparently they didn’t.
I will not be watching either. I would feel sick to my stomach the whole time.
No, not at all. Some of us realized it would be a wasted vote in the general election. It didn't mean that we didn't believe in his ideas for the country for the most part. His foreign policy and wanting to bring all troops home was the deal breaker, but then none of the candidates were perfect ~ as we certainly saw with McCain.
That point made, we in the military, had no respect for Clinton and had a nickname for him...
Obama is planning to cut military personnel by at least 25%, and wants to cut by 50%. He also wants to cut the budget by the same amount, not including cutting NMDs, nuclear weapons, and the WOT.
It’s going to be a wild ride.
Just as Clinton believed and believes to this day that he is above the law so too does 0bama.
And he thinks this will help. Wow, Obama is a bigger idiot than previously advertised.
