It was on Election Day when John Derosier said he first noticed his steady stream of customers at his Gretna Gun Works began looking more like a deluge.
"Business has been booming," Derosier said. "Gun sales have been up, ammunition sales have been up from the day of the election. It seems like they left the polls, came to the gun shops to buy guns."
Since then, gun sales at his shop are up nearly 60 percent. He said the sales are motivated by customers' fears that President-elect Barack Obama will institute stricter gun control laws. That could include a potential ban on certain assault rifles, like AR-15's.
Yet, despite the added sales, Derosier said he is far from happy and fears things could turn around, if any bans are put in place.
"It's good for now, but it's actually bad for the business because these are all impulse buying," he said. "A lot of people buying guns really don't have training and that scares me. I'm a firm believer people should be trained on how to use weapons."
Morey Butler, who co-owns 10-8 Tactical Gear and Supply in Elmwood, said he has seen a buying frenzy like this before.
"Prices went up during the Clinton administration on things that were banned 200-300 percent, as far as what people were willing to pay for them," Butler said.
He also added that business is nearly four times what it usually is this time of year. So far, though, the demand is far exceeding the supply-- not just in the New Orleans metro area, but across the country.
"There's no supply available, honestly," Butler said. "We can't pick up the phone and order any of these firearms because they're sold out nationwide."
Gun store owners say they are also concerned that the Obama administration could place a 500 percent excise tax on certain guns and ammunition. That concern stems from back in 1999, when as a state senator in Illinois, Obama supported such an idea. More recently, though, during the campaign, Obama said that he, "respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms."

Poll:
Obama / Guns
Are you concerned that guns will be less available under President Obama?
Yes
No
I want guns to be less available
By January when he gets in things will be so screwed up that nobody will pay much attention to what they do.
LLS
I was going to vote in the poll—but they want far too much personal information before your vote is counted. Count me out—LOL!
I saw that too, after I posted.
gun shops in my town are packed from open to close.
Holder is a gun grabbing nutcase. They will make a UN treaty to get your guns.
FREEP THIS POLL ***PING!*** FRmail me if you want to be added or removed from the Fearless Poll-Freeping Freepers Ping list. And be sure to ping me to any polls that need Freepin', if I miss them. (looks like a medium volume list) (gordongekko909, founder of the pinglist, stays on the list until his ghost signs up for the list)
Another thread suggests that this "buying frenzy" is largely a media creation, and that they're cherry-picking gun shop owners and FFL's who are experiencing a run, in order to fabricate a "buying panic" story whose real purpose is propagandistic: demonize gun owners as crazed, heavily-armed, mind-numbed robots of the Right -- scaaaary people!
Anyone who doesn't support "reasonable restrictions" and national registration, etc., etc., is actually a Phineas priest in training, you see, gradually gutting up for The Big One.
I've dealt with these folks for a number of years and they are straight up.
The President and Senate can't repeal the BoR by ratifying a treaty.
Typical Democratic thinking that will backfire. Gun theft will go through the roof and there will be more guns on the streets than ever.
Treaty trumps constitution.
Never underestimate your adversary. That could be the excuse they need.
They already have and they're everywhere.
If you want to vote, looks like a register site. Sorry, I should have checked before pinging.
Use “whatevername@bugmenot.com” for email (throway email site = www.bugmenot.com).
Fake whatever name and zip code you feel like.
“Lezbe Friends” voted!
I agree.
Civil War trumps everything.....for the victors, that is.
Treaties are the supreme law of the land only if they are made under the authority of the United States (see article VI, clause 2), and the only authority the United States has is power delegated to it under the Constitution.
In other words, treaties don't supersede the Constitution. Of course, the argument could be made that the Constitution isn't actually in effect any more, but that would mean that neither is the treaty power...
Lovely.
