National Intelligence Council report: sun setting on the American century

The report said that global warming will aggravate the scarcity of water, food and energy resources

Tim Reid in Washington

The next two decades will see a world living with the daily threat of nuclear war, environmental catastrophe and the decline of America as the dominant global power, according to a frighteningly bleak assessment by the US intelligence community.

“The world of the near future will be subject to an increased likelihood of conflict over resources, including food and water, and will be haunted by the persistence of rogue states and terrorist groups with greater access to nuclear weapons,” said the report by the National Intelligence Council, a body of analysts from across the US intelligence community.

The analysts said that the report had been prepared in time for Barack Obama’s entry into the Oval office on January 20, where he will be faced with some of the greatest challenges of any newly elected US president.

“The likelihood that nuclear weapons will be used will increase with expanded access to technology and a widening range of options for limited strikes,” the 121-page assessment said.

We would have tumultuous time ahead. Probably for two decades. History will impose its correction. Those who used to live on excess would be profuoundly shaken.

While America's relative importance can diminish, I don't see any player replacing its place anytime soon. Because China, India and Russia would go into its own harrowing correction. China and India have population size which stretched the carrying capacity of their land to the limit. Their population size would be set for "abrupt correction." Russia could continue to spiral down.

As bad as things would be in U.S., it could be much tougher for other major players. Those who are too cocky or arrogant would not survive this period.

We are to be humbled by history.

American decline is always around the corner. But until a political entity arises with the idealogical and economic unity of America that problem is far off into the future. Even if it is no longer 1/3 of the global economy, America is still the biggest player and can easily form winning coalitions with the anglo-saxon sphere and Japan.

The only problem America has is energy independence. Once we get some kind of fusion off the ground, we can stop giving a damn about the middle east and let Europe foot the bill from defending itself from a resurgent russia and the islamic threat from within. Let the euro-sissies pay the price for their arrogance.

Our "national intelligence community" missed India's bomb, Paki's bomb, the various Arab-Israel wars, the rout of S. Viet forces in Saigon, the N Korean bomb, the impact of China and India's demand for crude oil, etc...
Excuse me if I discount their opinions just a skosh.

Key word “Intelligence”, as in lacking any.

Because of a hoax we are doomed. I say prove it.

I have thought for some time that the economic correction in China will be worse than in the US. But the question is, what will Obama do? That really worries me.

Tough times coming all over the world.

The economic problem we are facing is far bigger. The international situation is messed up, too. Margin for safety is quite narrowed.

This time, it won't be a media hype.

Well if the US intelligence community is dumb enough to believe in global warming as all signs point to cooling, we can see that the problem is. Fire all the idiots who wrote this assessment and start over.

Interesting read, though the presence of Global Warming tomfoolery does diminish its credibility. However, I would agree that times both grim and dark are coming.

Yes, I did not like the inclusion of global warming, either. However, we would have some natural disaster wreaking havoc in combination of economic and social problem. Especially in China and possibly in India.

We are ‘humbled’ because we exported our manufacturing seed corn to the world, our military to bail out the world and aborted and contraceptived our growth.

"global warming"

That's a real tough concept to get through to read the rest.

I agree. I suspect Intel community has “PC-quota,” in the name of soliciting “diverse opinions.”

The problem is that these other countries may start wars to take their population's minds off their economic problems.

The global warming idiot activists will just make things worse.

"Otherwise, all the water is still here on the planet."

Those Ice Ages tend to reduce the amount of available liquid water.

Yes, wars will come inevitably. The question is whether they would stay regional or turn into global one.

If we can get by with just regional wars, I would call it a success.

I can see Russia rising in such times as they practice conservatism on many issues and don’t give weight to the globull warming hysteria.
