I've had a political dream for a while now that I think all of us WoW players can agree on: someday, I hope, we will have a President in the White House that plays videogames. We're not quite there yet, but we're closer -- apparently, Obama's FCC transition co-chair is a WoW player, and has played in two different endgame guilds, including Joi Ito's famous We Know guild. This is a guy who knows all about the communities that these MMOs create, and just how awesome it is to run through Karazhan, or grind PvP for a Merciless Gladiator weapon... and he's been selected by the incoming President of the United States to run the FCC. That's beautiful.
Too many government officials (both Democrat and Republican, this isn't partisan at all) suffer from the "series of tubes" mentality -- they are being asked to regulate and coordinate things that they don't understand at all. But getting guys like Kevin Werbach in there, no matter what your political affiliation, is a great step forward for all of us gamers -- we'll have people behind the regulatory wheel who know how important and wonderful virtual worlds like Azeroth can be.
Waltermonkey on Livejournal actually uncovered the guy's Armory profile (and has some great insight), and yes, though I'm sure some of the comments below will be about how you'd never be able to run a transition team AND get to level 80 at the same time, Werbach's been playing recently -- while he's still only level 70, he's actually got the Jenkins title. We've got a Resto Shaman helping run the FCC -- how awesome is that?
I oughtta go roll an Undead Death Knight on Eitrigg up 80 and go corpse camp his ass.
Oh, he’s going to be good for XP.
You do know there are assassins for hire on just about any WoW server now, right? :D It’s lots of fun to hire them to eliminate an annoying character, then hang around and watch the Level 80ers go to town on the person who offended you.
WoW sucks.
This just proves it.
What an idiotic thing to say. Like saying "I have a dream we will have a president who likes cheeseburgers."
The only “endgame” this new FCC chief plans on playing is “End brodcast freedom and re-enact the ‘Fairness Doctrine’”.
I’d rather play SOCOM.
You get to virtually shoot enemies in the head, dance on their dead bodies, and blow up vehicles with rockets.
Oh yeah, and working as a team can be applied to the streets...
LOLL!
bah enhance shaman is the way to go
apparently you dont play wow.. the trade chat channels were full of obama apologists before the election.. although to be fair there were a lot of people arguing the idiocy too
to clarify: arguing against the idiocy
ah, negatory, this guy at least is cool enough to play horde, and not alliance.. you would have to roll a lame alli death knight
But the biggest problem with this is just really bad thinking on this author's part. That just because someone plays the same mmorpg, reads the same books, or listens to the same music as you that this somehow makes them qualified to do a good job is just ridiculous. Sorry just because someone plays WoW does not mean they know squat about good federal communication policies for America. I have meet a lot of people that have the same interests as me but some of them I would not put in charge of walking my dog let alone hold a public office that would effect the lives millions of people daily. We need less pop culture influence more proven track record experience types in public office. Pop-culture is for entertainment value only not for RL(gaming jargon: for Real Life for those that don't game) where people can set precedence in decision making.
It is cool if someone as the same hobbies as me but choosing someone for public office based on that is nonsense. Also I have meet a lot of people that have the same interests as me and many that don't but when it comes to public office holding I would vote for or appoint people based on their know how of the job and because they shown through everyday living that they are successful in life, respect life and others, and have sound record of decision and judgment making. That is what qualifies people for public office not they are hip about some fad at the moment.
its split pretty even i would say.. politics doesnt come up often in the game, but there was a lot of chatter about this election
