Last time I drove through Hempstead (about a dozen years ago), I thought it was becoming more Hispanic, due to an influx of people from El Salvador.

For a stretch of Hempstead Tpke (and I was driving fast), most of the signage was in Spanish.

Hempstead, like Plainfield, New Jersey (which is basically Hempstead with nicer houses), is about 60% black, 35% Hispanic, with the remaining 5% comprised of Pakistanis and confused white people. I'm exaggerating, but not by much.

Now I’ve recently read that a school in Valley Stream (!) is in the process of naming a school after the Obamessiah.

Yep. Valley Stream was guido central when I was a kid in the 1980s. I guess the demographics have shifted considerably since then.
