Obama was NEVER going to bring abortion up and McCain decided to cede the issue and focus on "earmarks" instead. And McCain was really given a huge opportunity in the debate to knock Obama across the head with a 2 by 4 on the Born Alive Act, and instead McCain wiffed.

McCain seemed to like being the underdog - the “maverick” fighting against the powers that be.
I’ve seen people who give up their chance to win....in order to play the part of the loser.
