They have hailed as a hero Yury Trushyochkin, 70, a former Soviet officer who claimed last week to have fired the missile which brought down Mr McCain's plane as it flew over a bridge near Hanoi in 1967.
Mr Trushyochkin served in a mixed Soviet-North Vietnamese missile unit during the Vietnam war, which was guarding the bridge near a power plant under attack from a 20-strong strike force whose pilots included Mr McCain. The Soviet-made missile blew off a part of one wing of Mr McCain's plane and he ejected upside down moments before it crashed - suffering injuries which have plagued him ever since.
"This sincere Cold War hero is now living in St Petersburg and thinks he simply did his duty," the St Petersburg Communist group declared. "But in reality he defended the USSR and Russia, helping to guard socialism in Vietnam and teach a lesson to the future Number One enemy of Russia."
In an interview last week Mr Trushyochkin told a tabloid newspaper that he had been responsible for firing the missile, and had glimpsed Mr McCain soon after he was pulled from the lake in which he landed. "His hands were covered in blood and he was in a state of shock," he said.
The American, who failed in his attempted to run for the White House earlier this month, spent more than five years as a prisoner of war, and Mr Trushyochkin said he was glad he lost to Barack Obama.
"It's good he didn't become president. Even in the camp they said how he really hated Russians, as he knew it was our missile that shot him down," Mr Trushyochkin said. "Russian-American relations would have suffered, that's for sure."

Wanna bet Congress and Obama will give him the MoH?
Trouble is, he wasn't flying an F4.
If true, he was just doing his job on the other side. But it seems a bit late to give him a medal now, if they didn’t earlier. You get credit for shooting down an enemy plane, not a future senatorial maverick.
The torture in the Vietnamese POW camps was another matter entirely. And it’s fair to say that the Russians and Chinese were complicit.
Another group that seems to be emboldened now that the would-be Marxist Messiah is ready to assume office. Obama will never create socialism here, but he can make it a lot easier for Putin and the new Russian thugs to do a lot of sabre-rattling and posturing for the next four years.
And cuban commies.
Obama doesn’t want us to torture any of those pukes, but I’m not working for Obama and if they come around here they get tortured ~ knuckle at a time, and then we get serious.
I tought our media had proven that there were no Soviet troops in combat operations during the Viet Nam War just like there were none in the Korean War.
"Really ... That's fer sure." If this guy is for real, (which other posters have already pointed out that he isn't), he'd be the first Valley Girl Russian ever.
We gave them Eastern Europe and an armada of lend-lease (give, give, no pay) armaments.
RNC = RUSSIAN National Convention? Who knew! No wonder they’ve let so many good grassroots Republicans be shot down.
... Oh. Wrong thread. Never mind. Should have read the article.

And the Democrats heartily agree!!!!
Three planes, two of which were non-Combat. If you didn’t fly them maybe you should not expose your ignorance.
I guess he’ll just have to get his medal from Baraq Obama then.
This simply can’t be true. No Russians would have fought in the Vietnam War. Ho Chi Minh was simply a Vietnamese nationalist leading his gallant and heroic people in a struggle to throw off foreign control and reunite his divided country. Why, he wasn’t even really a communist -— joined the party only to assure material aid to his battered country -— so he certainly wouldn’t look to the Communist powers for personnel. The North didn’t even use Russian rockets (the use of fireworks being an ancient oriental art), instead cleverly fashioning anti-aircraft devices from scraps impudently tossed away by the imperialist Americans and their running dog puppets in South Vietnam.
Besides, America hadn’t attacked the Russians, so the Russians certainly wouldn’t have entered the fight on behalf of their ally -— the “loyal opposition” in Russia would have shut the country down if they had tried to do so.
This article must be a plant by right-wingers in the CIA...
I hate Russians to Yuri so drop dead.
