In his autobiographical memoir, Barack Obama’s mother is almost as distant a figure as his absent Kenyan father: America’s president-elect was largely brought up by his grandparents in Hawaii. But a trove of private letters obtained by The Sunday Times highlights her devotion to her son and her struggle to make ends meet as an anthropologist in Indonesia.
It was as a free-spirited student in Hawaii that Ann Dunham fell pregnant and married Obama’s father at 18, at a time when interracial unions were still illegal in many parts of America. They divorced when Obama was two and she later married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian. It was the start of a long love affair with his country, although the marriage did not last.
Dunham died at 52 of ovarian cancer in 1995, leaving behind a 1,000-page doctoral thesis on peasant blacksmithing in Indonesia, which friends still hope will gain her academic recognition. They believe her support for micro-financing projects and women’s work in Indonesia influenced Obama’s determination to build a grassroots campaign for president - and may yet shape his economic agenda in office.
Alice Dewey, a professor of anthropology at the University of Hawaii, was Dunham’s close friend and thesis supervisor. For her, Obama will always be “Barry”, as his mother called him. Dunham also had a daughter from her second marriage, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who is now a teacher in Hawaii.

The article says “she fell pregnant”, how does one fall pregnant, I had 3 children and I sure as h-ll never fell pregnant.
What if she was also manic-depressive? It is a common trait when manic... What kind of MOM leaves her first-born with her parents? Being a tramp is one thing, but that is a whole new level of something. I would LOVE to see a shrink’s notes on him.

I'm not so sure she did. It does say she made a career out of living in Indonesia, even after she split with Obama's adoptive father. I think Obama only went to live with his grandparents later so that they could pay for his education in an American collage. Up until that time, obama was just as is suspected, an Indonesian citizen living in indonesia up until it was time to attend collage.
Because the regular kids at the public school would have taken his lunch money from him every day.

To a part time former horseshoer blacksmith like me it mught be interesting. But then I still have THE MODERN BLACKSMITH by Alexander G. Weygers. It has a small section on Indonesian blacksmiths.

Actually, the blacksmithing information is about the only thing that I actually find interesting about this goofball woman. I’m always on the lookout for old-tech info and anything on smithing.

I’d say she was totally fixated on herself, to the point where she just abandoned her kid and went back to her self-fulfilling dream of being an anthropologist.
I didn’t realize that she never got her doctorate because her thesis never got done.
I have assumed, since I first heard of her because of Barry’s sudden prominence, that she probably read Margaret Mead and fell in love with the ideas found there. Lots of free, guiltless sex with South Sea Islanders and people of other races and cultures. None of those up-tight western rules and constraints.
She died of ovarian cancer. Maybe it was ljust bad luck. Maybe it was STDs, picked up from her Margaret Mead type lifestyle. If you have multiple sexual partners with people who also have multiple sexual partners, it’s liable to have bad health consequences as well as moral consequences.

Well, the obvious questions to ask her “close friend and thesis supervisor” Ms. Dewey are ones concerning baby boy Barry’s birth circumstances, i.e. where, when, under what conditions, etc. And also questions about where and when the loving mother got married and divorced.
