Giving up on the American dream (Illegal Immigrant Sympathy Barf Alert)
Denver Post ^ | 11/23/2008 | Bruce Finley

Posted on 11/24/2008 7:36:34 AM PST by ljco

A tightening economy and social hostility are driving once-hopeful Mexican immigrants such as Absalom Lopez out of Colorado.

Seven years after an illegal crossing that led to abundant work cooking and cleaning, Lopez, his wife and their 6-year-old, Denver-born son plan to chase their dream of opening a tortilla factory in Mexico. They say their $1,000-a- week combined earnings here plummeted in recent months to around $300. They're moving from a $700-a-month rented house in Wheat Ridge to a less costly two-room apartment until they head home to Veracruz next year, Lopez said.

Negative remarks and lower wages for Latino workers "hurt you," he said, citing social climate as a factor in his family's decision.

"Mexico's a better place to raise a child. . . . If we stay longer, we'll lose money, because there won't be enough work."

I guess they might want to stay home and reform their own country.

What an idea.

you never seen any sympathy pieces about the unemployed Americans who can’t get a job since they don’t speak Spanish or require paperwork that employers don’t want to do and can’t even get a job at Burger King or Wal-Mart (yes they do exist, many of my former clients were in this shape and yes, discrimination against hiring Americans does in fact exist).

I hope this is the tip of the iceberg. Seems the bad economy is hurting our illegal “saviors” from south of the border as much as anyone. If Obama has his economic way, he might solve our illegals problem by making this country completely void of jobs for illegals. Wouldn't that be ironic?

May they go home and raise their child to respect hard work and personal goal achievement.

And may he inherit his father’s taco factory.

I have a friend who pays cash to an illegal Mexican to do odd jobs and light construction — I have expressed to him why this is not a good thing — but whatever — it has continued now for about 8 years.

He told me this week that the illegal is returning to Mexico and that during his time here in the U.S., he has sent enough money to Mexico to build from scratch 3 homes. So, he is returning to a good living in Mexico.

The illegal said that if he returns to the U.S., he is going to go through immigration and be legal. Only time will tell if he will return — but I’d wager that he will VERY SERIOUSLY miss the gool ol’ US of A.

Ours is the BEST the planet has to offer.

Back in the 1930’s, these were known as “sob sister” articles. They haven’t changed much.

We are seeing the same thing in Oklahoma — illegals leaving rapidly after we passed a comprehensive illegal immigration bill.

My tears are for hard-working, honest American citizens who tried to do the right thing year after year and are now having a hard time of it because of the idiocy of our government and greed of some people in the business world.

If I have any tears left I'll shed one or two for people like the Lopez's.

I wonder what kind of remarks a gringo like me would get if I was living illegally in Mexico.First and foremost what kind of "remarks" would I get from Mexican immigration authorities?

“Americans” like your friend...and a few I know...make me sick to my stomach. They want it both ways- cheap labor and not to loose their job/home/profits. I have a neighbor who uses an illegal landscaper and she’s worried her husband will loose his job to India. I told her she can’t have it both ways and that shut her up. I told her that she does not know who she really has in her yard/home and exposing her two young children could be a health risk. She’s so protective of them in other ways. It makes NO sense to me.

I think a trip to a jail or violence shelter and a laundry list of what they suck from our governments might do many Americans good to see what this “cheap” labor produces.

What we do comes back to us.

This just proves my point. The only way to get rid of these folks is to cut off their access to jobs. The economy is causing many to self-deport. So would cracking down on employers hard. We do some token raids but not the coordinated effort we need. I think those are much more effective than trying to catch and deport every illegal. Obviously we need both kinds of efforts but cut off most of the jobs and you will cut off most of the illegals. Sadly Bush had no interest in this and Obama will have even less.

This abject failure of President Bush to do anything about illegal immigration is probably the single largest contributing factor to this current economic/financial mess. The effect on the housing industry and related trades has been catclysmic. It fueled the giddy bubble of these “quick buck investors”, the demise of many independent American contractors and the demand on state, local and federal governments for various services and benefits. I saw those things first hand. I’ve read and been told about how much cash they also milked from the system through straight-out mortgage fraud through buying and re-selling homes among family members. Bush told us they were “hardworking immigrants”. They were here for our money. They sent it back to Mexico and now they’ll go back, too.

“Chasing the American Dream?” HELL NO!! Our ancestors who were legally and properly processed for citizenship chased the American Dream. Illegals are border jumpers getting nudging themselves in front of the line.

While touring Poland in July 1991, I saw hundreds of Polish citizens lined up outside the American Consulate trying for the umpteenth day to get work visas to the come to the U.S. Many of these folks were bright, educated young professionals wanting a fresh start after decades of communism. These were people who would’ve brought a wealth of talent to our labor pool. It pisses me off greatly that f-ing illegals from Mexico get ahead of them.

“I wonder what kind of remarks a gringo like me would get if I was living illegally in Mexico”

Yeah, especially if you decided to march around in Mexico City DEMANDING to be given full rights of citizenship.

Now that a third of Mexico is living in the US, how about these hypocritical sob sisters criticizing conditions south of the border?
