Catholic Leader: Excommunication Possible for Backing Pro-Abortion Bill
LifeNews.com ^ | November 24, 2008 | Steven Ertelt

Posted on 11/24/2008 8:32:58 AM PST by SErtelt

Washington, DC -- A top Catholic leader says it is possible that Catholic members of Congress who vote for the Freedom of Choice Act could face excommunication. The legislation would make unlimited abortions throughout pregnancy the law of the land and overturn hundreds of pro-life laws nationwide that reduce abortions.

Sadly 50+% of Catholics voted for O and the Catholic Church gave and may still give money to ACORN and other lefty groups. There are many good people, priests and bishops but sadly the few bad ones do the devil’s work with ACORN.

35 YEARS of ... blah blah blah ... Should have made an example and excommunicated TEDDY KENNEDY... but NO.. The CHURCH gave him an ANNULMENT after how many years and how many children.

When I see that, then I may come back to MASS ..

Anything is “possible”, doesn’t mean it will happen.

From past history, I doubt if any Catholic congress people will be intimidated by this into doing the right thing.

If the Catholic Magesterium wants to catch their attention and actually make them believe their threat, a few preemptive excommunications of high profile anti-life politicians might do it.

The day the Catholic Church excommunicates a$$holes like Father Pfleger and every other so-called 'priest' that preaches Marxism in the form of 'liberation theology' will be the day we know they're serious.

Until then, the 50% of Catholics that voted for the first Marxist POTUS are indicative of how far the church has fallen, IMHO.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

“Possible”?
“Could”?

Geeze! How typical of these weak Catholic leaders!

True reform in the Catholic Church will come from the many faithful God-fearing Catholics who practice **ALL** of their religion. These are the people who will drag their weak bishops, priests, and Catholic educators to the altar of true repentance and demand that they do their jobs. I wish we had a nation full to the brim with these good Catholics.

Yes, I remember this discussion shortly after Roe V Wade.
That was 1972. If anything, it is much less likely now.
I believe that Knights of Columbus has taken some actions against pro-choice Catholics but that has been about it.

Possibly, but substance might be behind the statement. If the statement is true, excommunication is aimed at one man: Edward Kennedy. He has been a leader in the pro-abortion movement, but remains within the Catholic Church. He is old and sick; death will come within a couple of years at most. I believe the Pope wants to demonstrate that no one or no family - however prominent, powerful. or wealthy - can flout the doctrines of the Catholic Church without facing the consequences.

You might be excommunicated however, if you come up against illegal immigration. Especially in the southeast parishes.

Actually it was not the Church that gave him an annulment. It was the Diocesean Marriage Tribunal. The decisions of the tribunal are not by any stretch of the canon, infallible. They are canonical decisions and subject to the same errors and abuses that plague civil and criminal legal decisions. So please do not blame Catholicism for poor canonical decisions made by CINOs.

Yes, just do it.

No “automatic” excommunication where the individual “excommunicates himself”.

No, we need a high ranking Catholic to publically declare

“since you voted X on bill Y, you are now FORMALLY excommunicated”.

To an outsider looking in your post is completely confusing. Doesn’t this tribunal operate under supervision of the hierarchy? You seem to be saying that the annulment process is somehow outside of Catholicism.

Having been a Catholic, I haven’t even heard of this stuff.. so to an OUTSIDER what you have said makes NO SENSE to Them, when it doesn’t make sense to ME.

Idiot group of Catholics gives an Annulment to a RICH Liberal MORON, it DOES reflect on the CHURCH and thus they will take the BLAME... there is a great smackdown about pedophile Priests, but I won’t go there ... yet

Sorry it was confusing. It is necessary to distinguish between decisions which are infallible and those which are not. Decisions by the marriage tribunal do not come under the former but are canonical decisions. These are the church equivalent of civil legal decisions. And though I have great admiration in our justice system I do not expect the system to be without error in its teachings or conclusions.

So bottom line marriage tribunals err. They screw up. They are prone to favortism, prejudice, unreasonableness, and outright stubborn stupidity. Members do not hold the charism of infallibility either by virtue of their person or their office.

And if you think everyone under the supervision of the hierarchy somehow can never, ever do anything contrary to Catholic teaching you have never encountered religious education in many parishes.

It is not outside Catholicism but as I stated above you must understand the difference between infallible teachings and canonical decisions.

Not in this story, but others have floated about indicating that the Vatican is quite aware (and supportive) of the efforts to warn Catholic politicians of the consequences of voting for FOCA.

Yes, I agree. As a Catholic, it saddens me to see. Even prolife Catholics I know bought the 'change' mantra. If they follow through with excommunication, it ought to be interesting. One can already see the line in the sand, i.e. Maria Shriver proudly announcing what we already knew and what she kept mum about until the One was elected, that she is a cafeteria Catholic. Seemingly suggesting solidarity with Pelosi and Biden and others as 'smart' people who 'pick and choose' what to believe (her words).

And now, they should be "picked and chosen" for a swift kick out of the front doors of the Church.

Okay, disclaimer: I said in another thread, it isn't up to me to be judgmental; but the thought does occur to me and these people in high places have more of a chance than some others do that by their actions they deny.
