GWB and Palin are grating doofuses when they are “folksy” and plain-spoken, but the low rent crudeness and stridency (to put it mildly) of Barry and Aunt Esther are oh so charming. “
Remember how the word “gravitas” was used in every sentence by the media—even when reporting the weather?
Hi,
There’s quite a lot of difference observation, constructive criticism, stating the blindingly obvious, and fraternising with the enemy.
Stating the obvious:
All candidates for the White House make exaggerated promises and experience/background is always an bone of contention. AND SO IT SHOULD BE, because that is the nature of the electoral democracy.
As bizarre as it may sound, people will vote for someone who has five minutes of experience and sounds like a visionary, rather than voting for someone with decades of experience who sounds like he’s doing it by the numbers.
That’s a quirk of democracy that the UK establishment learnt the hard way when two of the three parties put the old duffers back in charge and got trounced. The only duffer in charge of a Party in the UK, is Gordon Brown - and that’s only because Blair handed him the job, he spent then years running the economy first, and he won’t have to contest it at a general election.
Constructive criticism:
If Obama’s promised to TRY to find Bin Laden, it’s easy for the Right to mock this but the Right does need to bear in mind that that is, to many a Democrat or even a moderate Republican, far more believable as a promise, than asserting that you already know where Bin Laden is and promising to go get him.
In the event that Obama does get inaugurated as President, the attention must turn to winning the next election.
Conservatives need to get smart in terms of debating tactics - i.e. know when using a certain argument against the opponent will shoot yourself in the foot.
