A new survey by the University of Massachusetts at Boston's Institute for Asian American Studies attempts to fill what the authors say is a gaping hole in the research on immigrants.
"There's been a lot of attention paid to immigration rights and policy," said the institute's director, Paul Watanabe, at the survey's unveiling last month. "But the fact is, there is virtually no [statistical data] based upon Asian immigrants and the Asian community."
The institute's study, "Interest and Action: Findings from a Survey of Asian American Attitudes on Immigrants, Immigration, and Activism," found that 80 percent of the 412 Asian-Americans surveyed pay either a great deal of attention or some attention to immigration issues.
It also found that 58 percent said they were very sympathetic or somewhat sympathetic to the Latino community's stance on immigration issues, and 52 percent support a legalization process for undocumented immigrants.
The survey also asked respondents about their likelihood of participating in activities supporting greater rights for immigrants. While 33 percent said they were very likely to sign a petition, only about 9 percent said they were very likely to work with others in an organization, or to participate in a march or demonstration.

I don’t see Asian immigrants agitating for whatever. If they don’t get their way they don’t protest and complain.
And I see hispanics and blacks wanting this program for school and that program for school. But the Asians just shut the hell up and go to school. That’s it.
And all the hispanic and black kids want to copy of them. Because they did the work. They didn’t need a special Government program. They just put down the weed and the baggy pants— and went to work.
Thats exactly what this article seeks to address. The liberals see another 4% segment of the population to adapt into their woe-is-me political b*tchfest.
I'd like to think Asians are far too successful in this country to succumb to the siren song of racial grievance but who knows... these days its the color of the skin that determines identity, & to hell with content of character.
Exit polls showed Asians being 2% of the electorate. They went for Obama by 62% to 35% for McCain and 3% for other candidates.
The new immigrants don’t realize how the US got to be what it is ie Constitution. Since they don’t realize the importance of the US Constitution, they have no respect for it. Just my opinion and I don’t know any immigrants to my knowledge.
A ‘’new look’’ at Asian immigrants? I dunno... they still look Asian to me.
