It’s been my experience that when you level a shotgun at someone, they take it on faith that it is fully functional and loaded.

Even an unloaded or nonfunctional shotgun can be a lethal weapon..... when swung hard enough against the perp’s brain housing group....
More than a few men have been killed by unfired weapons.
