Actually, I think what you mean is that churches without hierarchies are more difficult to sue successfully because they don’t have deep pockets. I’m well aware of the greed factor. :) Still, the problem existed, and it was terrible.

As long as there are pedophiles or their enablers on the bench it's always going to be difficult to sue these guys, and they will continue to seek employment that gives them access to children.

Deep pockets or not the churches with no hierarchy do not present a multi-congregation target for either the pedophiles or their victim's lawyers.

I grew up in one of the parishes with one of the more - ummmm - infamous pedophile priests. I don't care to give specifics on a public board, but it you want to contact me privately, I'll tell you exactly who he was, and in what diocese. And I most certainly believe a few bishops should have been put in jail along with the pedophiles. To this day I don't think the pedophiles have damaged the church nearly as much as the bishops who hid their crimes.
