New Study: Direct Link Between Abortion and Mental Health Problems

Washington, DC -- A new research study featuring numerous controls and a national data set finds a link between abortion and psychiatric disorders. The study directly contradicts the report the American Psychiatric Association released in August claiming abortion causes no mental health issues for women.

The research team found induced abortions result in increased risks for a myriad of mental health problems ranging from anxiety to depression to substance abuse disorders.

Ultimately, the authors write that abortion is directly "responsible for more than 10% of the population incidence of alcohol dependence, alcohol abuse, drug dependence, panic disorder, agoraphobia, and bipolar disorder" among all Americans.

“A person would have to mentally ill to kill their own kid...”

Perhaps not mentally ill, but mentally defective at least.

This is very valuable, Steve, because when the Obama regime tries to force pro-life medical providers to refer for or perform abortions, they can point to it and say that they're exercising professionally competent, standard-of-care medicine by not referring for abortion.

It's not necessary to invoke any pro-life or freedom of religion arguments in court when you can prove that abortion is bad medical practice.

I sat and talked with a young woman (employee) who had gone into a serious state of depression. I found her sitting alone on the step outside...shunning everyone that day.

It was the 5th anniversary of her abortion. She finally broke down and just plain cried. I didn't send her home but reminded her that she has a 3 year old son who needs a strong mom.

I suspect abortion is a silent source of agony for millions of women. I have met only a handful of women who admitted they had aborted a child, but statistics say I must know many who never speak of it.

It brings to bear the old question: What came first, the chicken or the egg? But then again, if it were up to Planned Parenthood, their would be no more chickens.

There have been many controlled studies the last 20 years showing that depression, substance abuse and posttraumatic stress are common results of the abortion experience.

This is not news to the thousands of caregivers who work with aborted women every day. Only the "official experts" of the APA's are sufficiently blind that they will not see-- for all the usual political reasons.

In 1970, Nobel Prize winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn observed:

“Let us not forget that violence does not and cannot flourish by itself; it is inevitably intertwined with lying. Between them there is the closest, the most profound and natural bond: nothing screens violence except lies, and the only way lies can hold out is by violence.”

The more odious the violence, the greater the deceit is needed to justify it. Therefore, the defense of partial-birth abortion has required an inexhaustible store of lies.

I would think that those that suffer from these types of problems would be more likely to receive abortions. I am sure that having an abortion can cause these problems as well. This is the problem that I have with LifeNews. They don’t seem to understand that there is a big difference between causation and correlation.

I’ve got the article if anyone wants to read the methods, conclusions, discussion, etc.

“Induced abortion and anxiety, mood, and substance abuse disorders: Isolating the effects of abortion in the national comorbidity survey”
“Journal of Psychiatric Research,” In Press, Corrected Proof, Available online 28 November 2008, Priscilla K. Coleman, Catherine T. Coyle, Martha Shuping, Vincent M. Rue

Data source:

“The national comorbidity survey (NCS) is widely recognized as the first nationally representative survey of mental health in the United States. The general purpose of the NCS was to study the prevalence and correlates of DSM III-R disorders and service utilization trends for these disorders (Kessler, 2008). The structured psychiatric interviews were administered by the Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan (UM), Ann Arbor, between September 14, 1990 and February 6, 1992.”

It's more likely that someone who is willing to kill her unborn child because she doesn't want to deal with it or is too afraid of what people would say or doesn't want to get caught is someone who already has serious psychological problems.
