Unlikely Allies: Barack Obama and Robert Gates
Fox Blog ^ | 11/30/08 | Judith Miller

While the rhetoric about the nature of America’s struggle against Islamic militancy will undoubtedly change after January 20, the need to continue killing, imprisoning, and de-radicalizing such extremists will endure, as the latest attack in the Indian city of Mumbai so tragically attests.

Each liberal antibushie that accepts a position within Odinga’s government, acknowledges that Bush is correct in his handling of the war on terror.

(Gates) not only knows where the proverbial bodies are buried, he has probably buried a few of them himself.

LOL!

My guess is that Obama is eying Wesley Clark for Defense Secretary, but will have to wait until April of 2010 due to the National Security Act of 1948. There were rumors about Powell, but how can you not look like “Bush’s third” with Powell at Defense?

Gates is a technocrat, and him being the SecDef will be good for the troops and the US, unless Obama and ilk are becoming dominant. This is what I fear. That Obama will either use Gates (and thus the very policies he opposed) to get credit for “winning the WoT”, and pave the way for Democrat rule for at least a decade, or he will pin HIS failures on Gates the Fall guy. Part of me wants that Gates had resigned and let the Dems crash.

Why would someone hooked on drugs (oil) want to strike out at their drug supplier? Largely Arab Muslim countries supply our necessary addiction to oil, so we will never attack the real source of the Islamic terrorism.

Our elites are too given to compromise with the enemy. Reminds me of some elements of the British aristocracy in the 1930’s, who thought that accommodation with the enemy was fine.

This could mean Gates is carrying over Iranian attack plans into Obama’s term.

"...the need to continue... imprisoning, and de-radicalizing such extremists will endure..."

What's this "imprisoning" B.S.???

You don't call the Orkin man to "imprison" cockroaches, do you?

You can't "de-radicalize" rats, can you?

Hell no!
You just exterminate them!

You hit the nail on the head!

Obama uses people and then sacrifices them if it benefits himself. Loyalty should be a two-way street; Dubya’s mistake was in believing Democrats who worked for him had a sense of honor and loyalty. If they are partisan, and most Democrats are, then they have neither.

I prefer to think Gates is being a patriot by staying in place to give what protection he can from Obama’s people. They have been very clear about weakening the military.

"Part of me wants that Gates had resigned and let the Dems crash."

Keeping Gates in charge is what's best for our country. The man has a considerable ability to focus and stay on task with what's important. He doesn't appear to micromanage and doesn't let partisan infighting interfere with the mission. He has a considerable talent for surviving the bureaucratic games in DC and has successfully kept otherwise difficult people at bay. We are very lucky Obama will be keeping him in for at least a year. But as someone here as stated, I wouldn't be surprised if Obama tapped Wesley Clarke to succeed Gates though.

Obama kept him only because he thinks there is a significant chance of an international crisis on the horizon.

This also enables Obama to put more of his focus and energy on the economy when he takes office. Either way, I am encouraged that Gates is staying in...he really is the ideal public servant and leader who always puts America’s best interests forward in whatever decisions he makes. Have you seen the video footage of him speaking about the Lion of Fallujah? He seems like a genuinely good person...you really don’t see people the caliber of Gates very often in leadership positions anymore.

As a side note, if you haven’t seen it already, probably the most useful speech I have seen from Gates regarding how he thinks and how he runs a war, is his speech given in Colorado at the Broadmoore early this summer.
