Michelle Malkin: eHarmony and the tolerance mau-mau-ers
MichelleMalkin.com ^ | 11/21/08 | Michelle Malkin

My syndicated column today expands on yesterday’s eHarmony post (link). As I note, eHarmony will be forking over $5,000 to the gay plaintiff and $50,000 to New Jersey’s Civil Rights office. Here’s the entire settlement the company agreed to, via onlinedatingmagazine. There’s more on the class-action lawsuit against eHarmony proceeding in California here. And Jacob Sullum weighs in.

*** The eHarmony shakedown by Michelle Malkin Creators Syndicate Copyright 2008

Congratulations, tolerance mau-mauers: Your shakedown of a Christian-targeted dating website worked. Homosexuals will no longer be denied the inalienable “right” to hook up with same-sex partners on eHarmony. What a landmark triumph for social progress, eh? New Jersey plaintiff Eric McKinley can now crown himself the new Rosa Parks — heroically breaking down inhumane barriers to Internet matchmaking by forcing a law-abiding private company to provide services it was never created to provide.”Men seeking men” has now been enshrined with “I have a dream” as a civil rights rallying cry of the 21st century. Bully for you, Mr. McKinley. You bully.

What’s next, the “gender-confused” suing Wal-Mart for not selling clothing targeted specifically to them?

Perhaps cat owners will sue to have their pets entered into the Westminster dog show.

eHarmony should just shut down and say “its they gays fault”

Make a little backlash.

This is the kind of column that makes me mumble "People suck," because there are so many who will look at this and think "Oh, cool, they're being nice to gay people!" and not even see how freaking horrifying it is that private companies aren't allowed to do their own damned thing because SOMEONE (who's not a straight white man) doesn't like it.

Why are people so freakin scared because someone doesn't accept their way of life? Has nothing to do with violence, or keeping those people from equal protection under the law. Can't stand the idea that someone doesn't agree with them and is allowed to just go on thinking their own thoughts, having their own values.

We are in deep trouble because we've got a whole generation coming up that thinks certain THOUGHTS are illegal. They can't grasp that if someone doesn't like gay people there's actually nothing wrong with that--as long as they don't infringe on those people's rights.

They truly believe they can outlaw "bad" thoughts with this kind of thing.

I'm oversimplifying, but I don't have the patience to be very articulate right now.

Gays cannot just go about their lives, they have to try to FORCE people to LIKE their way of life.

It's lunacy.

In a generation or two, if a man refuses the advances of another man it will be seen as a “hate crime.”

I think I’d just close e-harmony down if I were running it. Lay off all the employees and shut it down. Give the ex-employees the address of the fruitcakes that pushed this outcome.

I agree completely. I don’t get why having civil unions is not good enough. I could care less if the government recognizes my marriage. I love who I love, it just happens to be a woman and we have lots of kids.

The GLBT community needs to chill out. Understand that most of the world believes it is a sin. Be lucky you are not in a country that treats this with the death penalty. If you want to do some good for your GLBT community go to those places that punish homosexuality with REAL punishment. Help those folks out, do some good in this world. Quit with the self centered pity party. The rest of us are unimpressed.

There are dating websites (that charge a fee) specifically for GAYS, do they need to now include straights? Also many for Christians, some specifically for Catholics, at least one for Jews to meet other (heterosexual) Jews, and probably many others.

eHarmony caved, they should have defied the law or closed down. If something this absurd were to be tried on Ave Maria Singles, no way would they go along with it, never. The founder of eHarmony claims to be a Christian, here was his opportunity to stand for Christ and he sold out.

I don’t see how you can say he sold out. He faces a class action lawsuit and everyone knows how pricey they get. Also, most likely the suit that he settled on would have been found in the gay guy’s favor. I’d bet that’s what his lawyer told him.

I’d rather he settled, stayed in business and helped people find good matches rather than go out of business. I know several people that have found someone through eHarmony and been married a few years.

Maybe someone should go after Ave Maria Singles and see what happens there...on the other hand I’d love to go after the gay dating sites if I was single. Of course, people would be horrified, saying leave them alone...

Can’t win for losing in this world lately.

First, the site will never be the same, the reason it was effective is it was based on a methodology of people seeking compatible mates for marriage. Now it will accommodate perverts seeking some sort of connection with other perverts, the criteria for psychological matching will not work. So first, he has sold out his own customers because the very nature of how the matching and communicating works on eHarmony will change.

Second, how can a Christian sponsor an activity that is one of the four sins that “cry to Heaven for vengeance”? How can a Christian further MAKE A PROFIT by encouraging such sinful behavior and helping those wishing to commit the sin to meet each other?

If that’ not selling out I don’t know what is. Christians around the world are being tortured and killed for their FAITH, and this guy follows the advice of his lawyers? You’re correct it might be the smart business move, but I don’t think that will be a sufficient explanation at the Pearly Gates.

I went to this site and was very disappointed that they could not help me find the woman of my dreams. Never mind that I have already found her. The point is this site does not cater to my every whim and I “feel” very hurt about their intolerant oversight. If there is “gold in them thar hills” we hetero’s should start digging.

Alright - lets put names where they belong. NJ Attorney General Anne Milgram (lesbo) helps trash a private business - because it does not cater to homosexuals? What king of creep is this woman? We will find out, and we will let people know.

Excellent post.

One of my very best friends is a gay man, and the funny thing is, he used to be as militant as they come, and HE is against gay marriage. He has a great appreciation for his family, his sister's kids, etc., and he says "It's not the same thing," and he can't get why so many gays insist on trying to force this issue.

I think this has a lot to do with how much government control we've given over every part of our lives, or would LIKE to give--healthcare, retirement, etc. Now, gays want the same goodies--which means a person's tax money is going to be funding unions they themselves don't agree with.

This is why all this "good stuff" from the government is so vile--it FORCES people to fund things they don't agree with, and the "progressives" measure one's worth by their willingness to accept AND FUND lifestyles they feel are not what they support.

She was a civil rights lawyer so maybe that has something to do with her basically violating the right of eHarmony to conduct their business as they wish.

Given her position on the above this struck me as a bit odd: Attorney General Milgram has expanded officer’s powers regarding illegal immigrants. She told the New Jersey State Police to inform federal authorities when an illegal immigrant is arrested in an indictable crime or for drunk driving. On August 22, 2007, in the wake of a triple-murder in Newark in which previously-arrested illegal immigrants may have been involved, she said that she wanted local, county and state police to hand more serious cases directly to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).[6] The attempt to have local law enforcement officials coordinate with federal authorities is consistent with Section 287(g) of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996. [7][8]

The number of illegal immigrants referred to federal authorities jumped dramatically, in the months after Milgram’s order. From September 2007 to February 2008, New Jersey law enforcement entities reported 8,874 illegal immigrants to the ICE center in Vermont. This contrasted with the 4,589 period for the same months a year earlier.[9]

I have enormous sympathy for eHarmony, whose attorney explained that they gave in to the unfair settlement because “litigation outcomes can be unpredictable.”

When you start taking ethics advice from a lawyer you've already exhausted any small amount of integrity and character you might have had!

A real man of integrity would say "I'd rather keep true to my soul and loose the whole world. I can't be bought by this degenerate man or any other! I was born in the image of God and bought with the blood of his only begotten Son. I am not my own and God does not condone my auction to anyone. Whether thirty pieces of silver or thirty trillion, I will not be moved. I know not what course others may take; but as for me, Give me Purity or give me death!"
