N. Korea, Chaos from Succession Intrigue [Mainichi Shimbun]

Yonhap News

Jang Sung-taek, Director of Party's Administrative Department(& brother-in-law of Kim Jong-il), who is backing Kim Jong-nam(age:37, Kim Jong-il's eldest son,) asked Lee Je-gang, First Vice Director of Party's Personnel Department and the close associate of Kim Jong-il, to unite behind Kim Jong-nam (as the successor,) but was refused, according to Dec. 1 report of Mainichi Shimbun in Japan. Lee Je-gang is backing Kim Jong-chol, the second son (of Kim Jong-il.)

Lee's refusal drove an irrevocable wedge between two sponsors. Succession problem, coupled with deteriorating health of Kim Jong-il is creating chaos (inside N. Korean regime,) said the paper's dispatch from Beijing, quoting sources with intimate knowledge of N. Korean regime.

Jang Sung-taek was sacked in 2004, but was rehabilitated two years later and is now a powerful figure as the Director of Administrative Department. He is said to be backing Kim Jong-nam, who was bumped off the list of succession favorites, due to his arrest in Japan(for entry with forged passport.)

Kim Jong-chol was appointed as a Vice Director of Party's Personnel Department, confirmed by a report last year. Lee Je-gang is his sponsor and working on expanding his powerbase inside the Party, the newspaper said.

Dying despot and two princes fighting for the throne. It is the classic palace intrigue.

Chia Pet appeared again recently, too. Saw his photo on Japanese Yahoo tonight, usual group photo with the military men stacked up on bleachers behind him.

Photo was shot from a ridiculously long distance though, so you cannot even tell if it is Chia Head or not. Silly North Koreans.

I heard that there are many such photos (group photo with dozens of soldiers) of Chia Head taken over the years. In one NK-related site in S. Korea, they showed several of them. The arrangement of people is quite similar in those photos. It makes good materials for photoshoppers to work on.:-)

Interesting indeed.

My take is that Kim Jong nam is a drooling retard, and Kim Jong chul is a queer. I wouldn't be surprised to see Kim Jong woon be appointed the successor, as young as he is. Of course this is putting a lot of weight in the account told by Fujimoto, but we get so little information out of the Hermit Kingdom, what else do we have to go on?

Regardless, if this isn't a smooth transition and the KFR looses control, this will be a humanitarian disaster of previously unknown proportions.

5 million half starved, fully crazed, North Korean thugs pouring across the DMZ and an equal amount over the Yalu river. Seoul over-run with gangs composed of hundreds of thousands young, violent, North Koreans, is bad enough. Can you imagine trying to get food and medicine to the 10 million still in North Korea, with impassable roads, no air strips, and factions of the former NK Military forming fiefdoms?

It's puzzling that this gets so little coverage, yet it's quite possibly the biggest powder keg on earth at this moment.
