Actually, I don’t think the prospect of a coalition govt was even considered. I think many people in Canada fell for the campaign pitch to deny Conservatives a majority so there’d be a check and balance, not so a leftist coalition could be formed.

Make the issues-bailout (Didn’t work here in the USA),

The liberals-NDP-Bloc only called up this becuase they were going to loose their federal funding,

any Dion’s failed leadership?? Do Canadians both English and French really want this guy as leader?

and anything else I may not be privy to being below the boarder..!

It’s the last resort right??

I thought it about when I noticed that Harper’s govt was a minority government. The Clark minority govt fell apart after months in 1980.

You do have have a Charter, and Constitutional Act of 1982 Correct?? So I know you are a Parliament; as opposed to a Constitutional Republic which we are, but you are a “constitutional” form of government..or am I wrong?? Just curious-I’ll be more correct in my lingo next time,..if I am wrong.

No the Governor-General first can determine a la Israel that another party can form a government and then designate that party to form a government. That party would then have to meet Parliament for a vote of confidence. If a coalition is secure then that government can maintain power until the next election which theoretically is 4 years away.

So this means liberals DO NOT respect Constitutional government on either side of the boarder??

Nothing unconstitutional or untoward about what happened here. In a Parliamentary system, you can kick out a minority government if you can form a coalition. That's just part of the game.

I thought the tradition in Canada was the party with most seats governed. The minority govt could be taken down on a confidence vote, but the other smaller parties did not attempt to govern via coalition.

It's always best to get in on the bottom.

Why can’t Harper call a snap election?

I guess he could.

If there is a "vote of no confidence", he either resigns or dissolves Parliament and calls a new election. Almost certainly the latter.

In any case, he either calls a new election now or in a few weeks, after Parliament votes against him.

But can you have a vote of no confidence for no reason? Or would they wait for Harper to give them some cause?

Would it look fishy to voters to have a vote of no confidence in the coming week? Would it look like a slap in the face of the voting public or like the natural result of an election that give no candidate a majority?

So if that one Con MP Luc Harvey hadn’t heckled the Qb leader Giles Duceppe, and a few other baby boomer Con Mps had not left the government, this wouldn’t have been possible.

Take the ridings where the Con candidate lost by under 2% of votes, and you realize the new NDP-Lib-QB coalition government stole control with less than 8,000 votes.

Canada really and truly needs to reform the election system, it’s completely out of control.

Let me get this straight:

Canada held a legal election in which the conservatives won. Now, barely a month later, the Liberals have struck a deal with a separatist element within the parliament to remove the conservatives from power?

That doesn’t seem like it will fly, and if successful, I can see a big backlash from the voters.

Agreed.

In the US as well.

A Whitehall style parliamentary system is typically very stable. If you can get 40% or so of the votes in Canada, you end up with 60%+ of the seats in Parliament.

Occasionally, though, whacky things happen.

Clearly, these wankers have not considered the will of the people or what the clusterphuck (no Canadian will consider this a coalition any more than if they included Mexico and Germany) would do if they did manage to overthrow the Prime Minister.

They got caught plotting with the blocheads, who the rest of the country despises, and all they can do is threaten to sue - hmmm, reminds me when a Republican aide stumbuled upon Jay Rockefellor's plans to use the cooperativeness of Pat(?) Roberts to surreptitiously plot investigations. Who gets canned? Not the treasonous Rockefellor, but the aide of course.

In this case, I think the Liberals have finally dealt themselves the fatal blow. The Canadian people won't stand for it.
