Ah no - we didn’t.
Hundreds of thousands of Australians legally own firearms, and there are millions of guns legally in private hands. For some reason, some groups in the United States have chosen to seriously misrepresent Australia’s gun laws. Law abiding citizens can own basic longarms easily, and more sophisticated or powerful weapons without too much difficulty, although you do have to navigate a bureaucracy to do that. Still, if it’s worth it to you, you can do it. I have.
Australia is hardly a paradise for gun owners - we have universal registration and licencing laws to contend with, and handguns are especially restricted (though, again, you can get a licence for a fairly wide variety of handguns - as again, I have). But we’re a long way from being disarmed.
