Anti-Christmas Message in Washington State Capitol Holiday Display
AOL News ^ | 12-1-08 | Mark Impomeni

The State of Washington accepted an application from an atheist group, the Freedom From Religion Foundation, to place an anti-religion message as part of the state's official holiday display in the state capitol rotunda steps from a traditional nativity scene. The decision is the culmination of a three-year long battle in Washington over inclusiveness in holiday displays. In 2006, the Port of Seattle removed a Christmas tree from the Seattle-Tacoma airport after a local rabbi requested to add a menorah to honor Hanukkah. That same year, an Olympia real estate agent, Ron Wesselius, requested to place a nativity scene inside the capitol building after observing a menorah displayed there. He was denied and filed suit. The state settled, allowing the manger to be displayed in 2007.

The atheist group's sign reads:

"At this season of the winter solstice, may reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."

I really think this is a symptom of the West’s inability to defend any philosophical position anymore. We used to all know that religion was socially good - even the irreligious acknowledged that.

But this makes zero sense! If they believe in nothing, then their display should be nothing. The other religions believe in something and their displays reflect that.

What nut job determined that an anti_display was appropriate?

I say lets play the “fairness” card: give them their place in government displays and give God his place in government schools.

“If they believe in nothing, then their display should be nothing.”

Oddly enough, some atheists these days have more evangelical zeal than most people of faith.

Atheism is, of course, a contrast. Atheism just enslaves bodies.

...why are they being a$$hole$? Okay I can go along if they want to put up a display that says “It’s the solstice” or something - but why the swipes?

Just like the gays - the people who demand the most sensitivity give none.

“There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell.”

And just where is their objective proof of this? Nowhere. This is just their own myth and superstition created out of the hardness of their hearts and enslaved minds.

I have no problem with this, if it means Christians won’t get hassled about putting up a Creche. I’m thinking people will read the atheists’ message and just snicker.

Exactly. Would they have accepted a display from a religious group calling all other religions and the non-religious...”heathens?” I think not.
