Chertoff to Hand Obama Immigration Successes
The Washington Times ^ | December 6, 2008 | Stephen Dinan

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff declared success Wednesday on President Bush's vow to double the size of the U.S. Border Patrol and near-success on his pledge to build a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border. The two measures leave President-elect Barack Obama in a better position to get an immigration bill passed, he said.

I guess that given the title, Barf Alert was superfluous. Even in its dying days the Bush Administration is trying to get amnesty and citizenship for 20-40 million illegals (AKA Democrat voters). It seems that they are more supportive of Obama, who will reverse everything Bush did, than they are of the millions of conservatives who hold the quaint notion that laws should be obeyed.

So ridiculous. I suspect that with modern technology and the right people in charge we could complete that entire fence in a single year - minus a couple communities that file legal action to block it in their region.

Near-success on his pledge to build a fence? So that’s what they call not building something these days. Who knew?

How are you going to get the illegals to leave, if we can’t even get the president-elect to prove that he’s not an illegal alien?

Mary Giovagnoli, policy director for the National Immigration Forum, which wants a more generous immigration policy, said the drop in illegal immigration is more likely a result of a downturn in the economy than an effect of stepped-up enforcement.

Those who want a more draconian immigration policy would also agree.

Not that I take any exception to that statement, because it's patently true, but what'll be interesting to see is how many crimmigrants deport themselves as the economy crashes.

The vast majority of them are unskilled illiterates who work in hospitality, construction, and landscaping. Well, if folks don't know if they're going to be employed next week, how many are going to eat out, travel, build a house, have their property landscaped? Further, if mom got fired and dad got his hours cut back, a job slinging plates at Chili's or cleaning rooms at the Marriott might sound pretty good. They're going to start getting pretty angry that they can't make ends meet while Pato and Rosamunda are working jobs they could do.

Will the D's risk losing vast swaths of American voters in exchange for a new subset of 20-40 million votes? Are those votes going to be dependable (once they realize we'll mail their welfare checks to them in Oaxaca, why stay where it's cold)? Can a major party continue to compete when it's composed of a diverse array of grievance groups (queers, mexicans, a few remaining unions, youthful idiots, etc.)?

We assume illegals are “conservative” by nature. If by conservative you mean to say reactionary in a dictatorial manner, you are generally correct. But let’s not forget that communists, fascists, socialists, and dictatorships are reactionary organisms. In their mother countries there are no checks and balances upon governmental overreach. In their fatherlands there are no separations of church and state. In their homeland, they never accepted rights we accept as god-given.
Even in business, the majority possess a “bossman” mentality that north generally do not accept.

I think every illegal I’ve talk with say they voted Obama. And yes, they voted.

Must be a STEALTH "virtual" fence since Cherkoff has been dragging his feet ever since Bush's border photo op. Before you can claim "near success" you have to have built at least something what was authorized....Bush & Company hasn't even made any real effort to START, let alone complete what was authorized.

Suggested reading for Cherkoff and Bush:

Private citizens have built more fence along the border than the government has and the next question is, where'd they direct the money that was already allocated for fence construction?

>>>>I suspect that with modern technology and the right people in charge we could complete that entire fence in a single year<<<<<

The 700 mile Alaska Pipeline was built in three years at a normalized cost of about $28 billion (2006 dollars), going over two substantial mountain ranges (Brooks and Chugach) and in temperatures of -40F to +90F (interior Alaska gets cold *and* hot).

Upfront permitting, planning, design, etc. added two years to the total.

In its day the pipeline was a marvel, and I distinctly recall that it was in the news and on TV regularly. There was a lot of interest in the guys who went to work on it, and what they were like.

Just like our 700 to 1,000 mile border fence, an engineering challenge which also is in the news and being reported on by the MSM all the time.

Why just this week I saw a Frontline and then a “60 Minutes” story on “The Fence”.......

/sarc

Nevermind.

“Judge” Chertoff who I once admired has become a shameless and unrepentant liar. It’s truly shocking how low he’s fallen in the last several years.
