Bishop Paul Loverde of Arlington, Va., had this to say last week about his response if the abortion lobbys Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) becomes law:
I would say, Yeah, Im not going to close the hospital, youre going to arrest me, go right ahead. Youll have to drag me out, go right ahead. Im not closing this hospital, we will not perform abortions, and you can go take a flying leap.
The Internet news service CNSNews.com reported Bishop Loverde made those comments to an audience of young adults at a Nov. 25 diocesan discussion about the implications of FOCA. In the video clip that accompanies this post, President-elect Barack Obama promises Planned Parenthood in July 2007 that he will sign FOCA as his first act as president.
FOCA would mandate the removal of virtually all federal, state and local restrictions on abortion.
There are no Catholic hospitals currently open in Bishop Loverdes Arlington diocese, but his comments were intended to drive home the total opposition of the U.S. bishops to any kind of compliance with FOCA.
A number of commentators have suggested since Obamas election that his pledge to sign FOCA means little. They say there is little chance Congress will pass the legislation, which was first introduced to Congress in 1989, even though the pro-abortion Democratic Party now has strong majorities in both the House of Representatives and Senate.
But 2009 will mark the first time since 1994 when both houses of Congress and the White House are all in Democratic hands. Douglas Johnson, legislative director of National Right to Life Committee, has warned this circumstance could embolden Democratic leaders to make a determined bid to pass FOCA.
Only time will tell if there will be a strong push for FOCA in the next Congress. But if Congressional Dems do decide to let it languish instead, the determined opposition of Church leaders like Bishop Loverde and other U.S. bishops will deserve a lions share of the credit.

There are no Catholic hospitals currently open in Bishop Loverdes Arlington diocese,
That put’s his tough talk in a little different context.
I might just go back to my Catholic faith if these bishops keep this up.
The mere thought of those losers in congress trying to tell anyone how to do anything appalls me.
I respect none of them.
It’s time for Jefferson’s revolution.
“That puts his tough talk in a little different context.”

I think he made his point.
Yeah. Indeed. He WOULD say that...if he had such a hospital, if he was in charge of it, and if he was putting his money where his big mouth is.
“where his big mouth is.”
—
He just put “himself” where his mouth is.
“I might just go back to my Catholic faith if these bishops keep this up.”
I am Catholic, but I am totally disgusted with the lack of action or stance taken by the Church’s leaders during the campaign of the baby murderer in chief. We could’ve had this election with more activism by our pious leaders at that time. With 53% of Catholics voting for Hussein, volumes have been spoken!!
After the fact verbosity is no more than a$$-covering and posturing. They’re a bunch of damned (literally!) cowards!
Militant
What hospital is he talking about? Hmm?
“What hospital is he talking about? Hmm?”

Like I said he is putting “himself” where his mouth is.
That puts his tough talk in a little different context.
Agreed. Changes it from a heroic stand to mere bravado.
You GO, Bishop Loverde!!
It IS ironic that the "Freedom of Choice" Act, doesn't allow that freedom to doctors and hospitals who cannot, in good conscience, perform an abortion.
It will be interesting to watch this play out. There are a number of newly elected Democrats, from the last three Congressional elections, who ran as pro-lifers, and were elected largely by those Reagan Democrats who hadn't had a Democrat for which they could, in conscience, vote, for quite a while. Makes you wonder what those Congressmen and women will do.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;-the First Amendment of the US
You must not have been paying attention! The Bishops spoke very forcefully on the matter. Unfortunately, Catholics' anger about the economy rendered that teaching moot.
Catholics, as were all voters, had been told, by the MSM, and the Democrats, that the troubles in the financial markets in particular, and the economy in general, were caused by the policies of President Bush, and his de-regulation of the financial institutions.
None of this was true, because President Bush didn't DO any de-regulation. The last de-regulation was done under x42. It was a major campaign mistake that this wasn't driven home, in the media. I guess the Republicans had been bullied by the MSM so much, that they were in a hurry to separate themselves from President Bush's policies, when they could have USED those policies to point out that it was, in fact, the Democrats who originated the mortage problems by Jimmah Carter's "Community Reinvestment Act", and compounded by Congress's creation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and its allowing them to be run into the ground by their fellow DEMOCRATS!
That’s about where I am with it as well. I am even the guy who takes up the collection and after this ACORN nonsense coming out, well, if I go to Mass tomorrow, it’ll be the first time in a month that I have.
and they like little boys. If they were not participating then they were knowingly covering up. The US Catholic Church has a lot to answer for and in a lot of areas, mostly leberal politics, but this stance is a good start in my book.
“It will be interesting to watch this play out.”

Yes it will.
As far as the Church goes, I think the Bishops are digging in for this one.
