Cracks appear in Obama foreign policy team
AP via Breitbart ^ | December 8, 2008 | Matthew Lee

The first sign of cracks in President-elect Barack Obama's foreign policy team of rivals emerged on Monday as his choices for secretary of state and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations visited the State Department. As Secretary of State-pick Hillary Rodham Clinton and U.N. envoy-choice Susan Rice separately visited the diplomatic agency's headquarters in Washington's Foggy Bottom neighborhood, persons familiar with the transition said that Rice wants to install her own transition team inside the department.

Such a move by an incoming U.N. ambassador is rare, if not unprecedented, because the job is based at the United Nations in New York, where Rice already has a small transition staff, the sources familiar with the incoming administration.

The push by Rice, an early Obama supporter whose position the President-elect wants to elevate to a cabinet post, is also a signal that she intends to use her influence with the new president to play a more significant role than previous U.N. envoys, they said. The transition sources spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

.....

It was not clear if Clinton and Rice—who had strained relations during the Democratic primaries because of Rice's steadfast backing of Obama—saw each other at the State Department as Clinton left the building shortly after Rice arrived.

During the presidential campaign, some Clinton aides saw Rice's early decision to back Obama as a betrayal because of her previous role as a high State Department official during President Bill Clinton's administration. Rice's desire to place her own team in Washington could fuel speculation that those tensions will carry into the new administration.

.....

Kerry has pledged to hold "swift and fair" confirmation hearings.

Was bound to happen. While he may regret it, Obama brought in Hillary on the godfather's principle "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer", so she could be watched over. Making Susan Rice's post as UN Ambassador a cabinet position, it makes her more visible and at the same time equal in rank to Hillary (when usually it's a subordinate position to SoS) thus keeping a check on Hillary and diminishing her authority and influence.

Pretty deft play, Susan Rice is no dummy.

BTW, doesn't Kerry's choice of word "swift" sound like a Freudian slip?

Hitler was known to maintain absolute power by having his ministers feud amongst themselves, while he could stand above it all.

Yes, and multitude of police and military services (SS/ SD, SA / Gestapo, Abwehr...) were given enough overlapping power to counter and feud with each other.

The practice goes far back in history, but has its obvious downside :
Abwehr’s chief Wilhelm Canaris was the smartest of them all, and he played no small part in helping Allies defeat Hitler’s Wehrmacht.

I pray everyday that Obama, if he must have him, that somewhere, somehow, fill this guy in.

Obama and Hitler? More likely a Obama and Stalin match-up.

Well, that approach turned out well in the end...

Just the opposite. I don’t think anybody will keep Hillary in check. Are you a liberal, because hard lefties are the only ones who praise Susan Rice, the way you just did. Are you aware she’s the one who refused to have to have Bin Laden handed over when the Sudanese offered him up?

I’ve heard that Clinton refused the hand over. What was Rice’s role?

With all these troubles brewing between India and Pakistan, King Tarzan can send Hillaroo over to India to relieve tensions a little bit. I hear she has a great Gandhi routine that's a real scream.

Hillary can relax the Indians with her Schtick:

Obambi is a genius.
She will be a perfect Secretary of State to send to India about now to lighten up tensions there with her repertoire.

I don’t think anybody will keep Hillary in check.

That mey be, which is why I said     While he may regret it, Obama brought in Hillary on the godfather's principle "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer", so she could be watched over ,     but that was obviously his impetus and something he thought would be the lesser of potential damage than leaving Hillary loose in the Senate, undermining him every chance she could and solidifying her power base. Making UN Ambassador a high profile cabinet position, i.e. promoting a subordinate to status equal to Hillary is designed to be a slap and a check on her. Whether it succeeds or not, I have no idea, but that's the intent. This old concept is often called "team of rivals".

Are you a liberal ...

No... hell, no. Sometimes, I am just misunderstood.

... because hard lefties are the only ones who praise Susan Rice, the way you just did.

I said "Pretty deft play, Susan Rice is no dummy."

Rather than "praise", I consider it an acknowledgment of her political acumen, not agreement with her ideology, philosophy, policies or politics. While there are plenty of "useful idiots", we don't have to claim everyone of our opponents are stupid, the way liberals try to paint everyone on our side, or anyone they disagree with. Their goals and the policies and ways they use to achieve them are different from ours and we have to do everything we can to fight and defeat them, but when we underestimate our opponents as "stupid", we should not be surprised when lose and they win. Democrats are not called Stupid Party, GOP is.

Are you aware she’s the one who refused to have to have Bin Laden handed over when the Sudanese offered him up?

Yes, she advised that to Bill Clinton, as many other things that were consistent with liberal ideas of disastrous foreign policy in Clinton administration.
