CHICAGO – Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested today on charges that accuse him of trying to benefit from his ability to appoint President-elect Barack Obama's replacement in the U.S. Senate.
The U.S. Attorney in Chicago says ...the corruption charges represent "a truly new low."
An FBI says the 51-year-old Democrat was intercepted conspiring to sell or trade the vacant Senate seat for personal benefits for himself and his wife.

While appearing to stick it to the Democrats the timing of these indictments actually protects other Democrats such as those around Obama from getting drawn into the pending “deal” on the Senate appointment.
This is the opposite of a “sting” operation, it’s damage-control for the Democrats.

That’s what I think to. Blago has got some choices to make. They had to get him first so that he can start plea dealing.
I think BHO and his whole team should be very nervous about what Blago may say to the feds. I don’t think this was done to protect BHO in any way, in fact I think it’s just the opposite. Getting Blago now will open up the door to start getting the dirt on BHO and his transition team.
Maybe Obama sacrificed one of his crooked cronies in order to drive the birth certificate story out of the news.
It is NOT the reason this corrupt DEMOCRAT governor did what he did, plain & simple!!!
Many people, including Blagojevich himself, knew he was under investigation. It’s likely Obama and his advisors knew it, and would have guessed the Gov was being wiretapped. The affidavit reflects that O was not willing to go along with the pay to play, which infuriated Blagojevich. Obama and his advisors will appear clean, even instrumental in the sting. It may be only wishful thinking to imagine otherwise.
I never said it was, on its own. Illinois has been full of corrupt Democrats for decades, long before George Bush appeared on the scene.
However, the aisle-crossing, consensus-building weakness of the Republicans has undoubtedly EMBOLDENED them to a higher level of arrogance.
One of many examples is the fact that, Bush had the bully pulpit of the Presidency for eight years, and said nothing while the likes of Murtha and Durbin slandered our troops to the point of near treason.
Why worry about consequences when you are given a pass like that?

I think you’re way too optimistic about this leading to Obama (in legal terms), but if so, here’s an entertaining if nightmarish scenario:
Remember that Rahm Emanuel was originally a big Bill Clinton guy..... suppose that Bill and Hillary were somehow able to scheme to get Obama to want Emanuel as his CofS without realizing the Clintons were the puppet-masters.
So Rahm Emanuel quietly arranges for other Obama advisers such as Valerie Jarret etc. to be go-betweens for Obama and Blago. Rahm keeps his own hands clean but subtly steers the process.
Further (bigger fantasy/nightmare here), imagine that Emanuel were working actively as a stealth Clinton agent to get Obama discredited and/or prosecuted and/or out of office, after one term if not sooner..... to clear the field for Hillary to run in 2012.... or even to be appointed VP if Biden ascends to the Presidency sooner.
How Machiavellian.....
We can all spin different versions of “The rest of the story”........
Nawww...a typical Chicago politician woulda chaged Obama a quarter mil and the new ‘appointee’ a quarter mil....Ill. the home of the most crooked mayor, the most crooked senator, the most crooked gov., and the most crooked president! I’d say they’ve got the hat-trick!
There are strong cases against him.
Let’s hope that Obama doesn’t fire Fitzgerald when he takes office. We need Fitzgerald there to prosecute this corrupt governor. And I hate how the liberals are acting like he being prosecuted because he’s a Democrat. Besides, Fitzgerald prosecuted the last Governor of Illinois, who was *gasp* a Republican.
